Floresville residents contributed $151.35 on opening day to the USO fundraising effort with total local donations reaching $111.85 in a few hours. Families and businesses urged others to give to help the boys in camp, supporting a countywide appeal amid the patriotic drive.
The American Legion held a summer barbecue with red white and blue decorations and a meal of barbecued mutton. After eating, a courthouse meeting elected BE. L. Ewing as Post Commander Hal V. Warren as Vice Commander Lloyd Brown as Adjutant E. L. Ewing as Service Officer E. F. Woolsey Jr. as Finance Officer H. W. Filleman as Historian Ed McDaniel as Sergeant-at-Arms.
Wilson County citizens respond liberally to the national aluminum drive with Judge W. M. Butler serving as County Chairman for the defense effort. A large bin was constructed to collect aluminum and support the program.
Floresville Junior Chamber of Commerce members met Monday night to hear the annual report of President B. M. Myers Jr. The group discussed pros stressed earlier and noted 18 indicated a notable exceedance in some measure.
Local field hosts 8 PM Friday softball game featuring the current league leader. HT'S. Event promises steady attendance and competitive play as teams vie for standings.
At a meeting of the county School Board the group decided not to adopt the 12 grade system for rural and common school district schools this year. They will consider adopting the system for next year and aim to decide before schools open in 1942.
Span San Antonio River to Picosa Creek Highway No 97 between Floresville and Pleasanton is now a reality with two new steel concrete bridges and three miles of road. Contractors Cage Bros and L A Turner completed the WPA project for the State Highway Department. The San Antonio River bridge spans 499 feet with a 24 foot roadway for Picosa Creek at 203 feet, using 1189 cubic feet of concrete. effects praised along the edge of town.
Floresville plans for the 1941 Peanut Festival launched in a district courtroom meeting chaired by President A T Sheehy. The fourth annual show aims to attract thousands for two big days and nights of entertainment with business and professional men serving on every department. Committee chairmen named include Charles Collins Jimmie Russell Leon Kreidel H W Filleman Miss Routh F A D Richardson Lester L H Mitchell S W van Spruce with more to be named.
The 1941-42 school year will open in Floresville with a faculty meeting at 9:00 in the high school. Teachers will be assigned and final plans announced.
Washington D C August 8 The Agriculture Department announced a loan and diversion program for peanuts to peg prices from 74 to 94 dollars a ton depending on grade. The plan lets producer cooperatives buy peanuts from growers at these designated prices with Virginia type grades listed.
The 1941 peanut crop in Floresville has begun moving with favorable weather expected to boost harvesting. Recent showers benefited late peanuts while early yields may be reduced. Government prices posted were 1.32, 1.23, and 1.12 dollars for No 1, 2, and 3 edible peanuts, with no price yet for oil mill stock. Bonded warehouse preparations are under way per manager J. T. Sheehy.
Floresville High School athletics group met Thursday evening and elected Supt. C. J. Garland as president, Richard Boll as vice president, and W. A. Bump as secretary treasurer for the new school year. The membership committee report appears on the Athletic Assn page.
Hon Robert Lee Bobbitt of the Texas Highway Commission dedicates a concrete bridge on Highway 97 between Floresville and Pleasanton spanning the San Antonio River. He lauds WPA involvement, urges cooperation on road building, and urges Americans to meet national challenges. A mutton barbecue preceded the ceremony with John Werland of Path serving as the barbecue chef.
Miss Laura Barber, 13, daughter of Otis and Mrs. Barber, died in a Floresville hospital after severe burns from a kerosene oil explosion while trying to start a stove fire at her grandparents Unity home. The accident occurred Tuesday, she was buried at Center Point after services at Murray Funeral Home. Victor Herrera delivered the first bale of 1941 cotton at Floresville gins weighing 537 pounds on Saturday, August 9, at Farmers' Gin.
The Floresville Methodist Church Vacation Bible School ends this Sunday at 11 A M with a special program by the students. Victor Herrera is noted as a participant in the event.
