Floresville High School released the 1964 65 calendar with six grading periods from August 21 to May 20 and test periods on select dates. Faculty register on August 29 and students on assigned days, with holidays including Labor Day, Peanut Festival, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas through January 3, Easter, and a May commencement.
About 100 Democrats from 19th Senatorial District gathered at the Cape County River summer camp near San Marcos for a spirited rally. Senator Walter Richter presided as master of ceremonies with party leaders, speeches urged unity, loyalty, and full precinct organization for the upcoming election.
La Vernia Mills now operates in full swing since July 8 under new owner Burton W Armstrong. The plant, formerly La Vernia Feed and Grain Co, hires 30 carloads of maize, offers custom grinding and feed mixing, sells Master Mix Feed and Armour Fertilizer, and is open Monday through Saturday 8 am to 6 pm with four part time staff assisting.
Ralph Wayne Donaho reported on his trip to the National Boy Scout Jamboree at Valley Forge where 52 000 scouts gathered and President Lyndon B Johnson spoke. Lions received plaques for financing efforts. solo awardees included J C Turner and C W Millikin. Floresville and nearby towns raised funds. A Donkey Baseball game was announced for August 27 with details to follow.
Local rainfall totals reported last Friday across the area include Kosciusko Black Hill Sutherland Springs Floresville Panna Maria Karnes County and Pleasanton with amounts ranging from 0.5 to 5.6 inches. Notable readings include Mitchell Ranch southwest of Floresville 3.40 inches Charlie Fuller place 2.00 A D Richards Farm 1.40 Panna Maria 1.60 and Cadillacs Helena Fashing among others. A window at the Kenneth Brown Service Center was blown in by the thunderstorm.
Wilson County cheers as Tom Luker of Stockdale High starred for the South in the North South All Star football game in Port Worth. The South won 23 17 before a record 30000 plus crowd. Luker, son of Mr and Mrs John Luker, started at halfback and delivered a standout performance for undefeated Stockdale Brahmas this season.
Market notes show 467 head selling including cattle hogs goats and calves. Prices listed by category show fat calves 18.00 to 19.60 utility 14.00 to 17.00 cull stock 10.00 to 14.00 and various hogs feeders and pigs trading across multiple ranges. Sows strong demand with limited supply and stock cattle and calves trading higher on lighter weights.
A tornadic storm Friday afternoon heavily damaged Rex McCloskey’s farm east of Florésville in Marcelina. The roof was partly blown off, lumber pierced the roof and ground, and a barn’s tin roof was carried away. The family lacked water until Sunday after a downed power line was repaired. Damage to the new barn was not insured.
A rear collision on the Stockdale highway involved a 54 Chevy driven by Ed Kruse and a 55 Chevy with Linda McCloskey. Mrs. Ed Kruse suffered a broken right arm and was taken to Memorial hospital. Mr Kruse and Miss McCloskey were shaken up. The crash occurred near the McAfee residence about eight miles out. Police Patrolman Buford Lyon investigated.
La Vernia Boy Scouts Troop 262 returned August 1 1964 from a week at Indian Creek camp. Eleven boys and four adult leaders attended listing Dwight Vorpahl Billy Wyatt Skip Kerschmer Byron Mouganroth Marvin Schroeder Melvin Schroeder Randall Goeth Herbert Hild Ricky Bell Kenneth Freeman and Conrad Greth. Leaders were Robert Ferry Jr Rev Kurt Hartmann Eddie Wyatt and A Goeth Jr. Five First Aid Merit Badges and four Swimming Merit Badges plus many first and second class requirements earned. Three members tapped out for Order of the Arrow Dwight Vorpahl Conrad Goeth and Robert Perry. For the second year in a row Troop 262 was judged outstanding troop and won first place trophy. Four boys received Daniel Hoone awards for marksmanship.
ASC announces September 15 as the start date to accept fall applications for cost share on practice like cover crops in Wilson County. The program covers ACP and related practices, with details released by the ASC office.

Henry A Natho owner of the Natho Paper Co died Wednesday August 5 1964 in San Antonio. Rites held at McClaugherty Funeral Chapel burial at San Jose Burial Park. He lived at 322 Hicks St was a long time member of the South Texas Press Association hosted annual party for 25 years. Survivors include wife Edna son Leslie H Natho daughter Mrs LaVerne Ridder two sisters and others.
La Vernia residents Mr and Mrs Melvin Witte have bought the old Suttles home on Beeck Street off Highway 87. They plan leveling repairs and painting before moving in. The house once housed the Curries and earlier owners including the Suttles family who ran a pottery business nearby in the Sandhills area.
A pair of trucks collided at an intersection near the County Library last Thursday August 6. The wreckage was cleared after the incident and patrolman John Newdino and Marshall Huddy responded. Extensis was involved and investigators estimated the accident site and actions taken.
Parents of children entering the first grade this fall are asked to register at the Floresville Plengen tary Building on Monday August between 830 and 3:00. Bring birth certificates and vaccination records.
A Friday accident near La Vernia involved a car and a pickup. Driver AmH bord anil a. fi and Melvin Griggs were ejected. Benedict Padalecki, driver of the pickup, stayed with the truck. Patrolman Buford Lyon and Deputy Erskine Densog led the investigation with San Antonio units assisting.
U S Sen Ralph Yarboroughs office said 23 Texas counties have been selected to receive drought aid under two federal programs. Farmers in Brazoria Dallas Dawson Falls Gonzales Hardin Hartley Jefferson Lavaca Navarro Wharton and Wilson County are eligible for aid under the program.
John W Hill is confined to the Veterans Hospital in Houston for a medical checkup and may stay about two more weeks. Sunday his wife Mrs John W Hill and Col and Mrs Chas Gustot visited. they report high spirits and improving health. Cards may be sent to Red 10 Ward 108 Veterans Hospital Houston Texas.
