FSA launches its water facilities program in seventeen states to aid small farmers. Loans up to twenty years at three percent enable families to secure safe drinking water, livestock and poultry needs, garden irrigation, and potential milk yield increases.
Wilson County Selective Service board lists 21 county residents inducted into the army on July 26. Names include Armando Castelland of Poth Jacobo Ramirez Floresville Richard I dwell Floresville Andres F. Con aeee Roman RB of Poth Cha Canada Daniel Garza Floresville Raymond C. Wright Floresville Pablo F. Stead Floresville Bennie J. Cannon Stockdale Alberto Perez Moresville Monsez Alvarez Ento Jesus Poth Gabriel J. Welek City Louis B. inricta Poth.
Embro Popcorn Co of St. Louis loaded 22 cars for the season with the final car due from Floresville around August. Watermelon shipments totaled 476 carloads with three cars sent August 1. Peanuts began moving last week with five cars loaded to date and the first car on August Tth. A prolonged drought has hurt the peanut crop, though recent rain could help late plantings. A peanut hay crop is good but nut yield remains light.
John Yeary aged 48 son of Mr and Mrs Jas Yeary of Karnes City died Friday night at Santa Rosa Hospital San Antonio after a heart attack and complications. Funeral held at Karnes City Baptist Church. Survived by widow parents brothers Sgt Jim Yeary overseas and Mrs Eschenburg as sister. Local friends extend sympathy.
Floresville friends learn Lt. John Connally has been transferred from the Essex to an Admiral's ship after a Pacific tour. His wife Mrs. Connally and daughter Kathleen reside in Austin during his overseas service. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Connally of Floresville.
Lucille Bolt daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank J Bolt married Captain Joseph A Heg de in a double ring ceremony at First Lutheran Church on Sunday August 6 at 9. Rev Theodore Winter officiated. The bride wore kid gloves and a purple orchid and stephanotis. Mrs Bolt mother of the bride wore navy blue crepe with a white lace collar, and the bridegroom’s mother wore a tailored gray mesh dress with white accessories.
The Spruce family plans to move to San Antonio by September 1 under a new lease. Mr and Mrs Spruce are praised as community leaders and longtime residents of the county. Daughter Constance will join them in the Texas city as friends extend best wishes for their new home.
Mrs Margarita Urrabozo, of Stockdale, was notified by the War Department that Pfc Louis Urrabozo was killed in action on Okinawa June 20. In the infantry 11 months of service, he is survived by his wife and two children. His parents, Louis Urrabozo and his wife, live in San Antonio. Wilson county citizens express deep regret at the loss of this soldier who gave his life for his country.
Floresville Lions Club at a weekly luncheon elected J. apeehy as president succeeding H. Filleman. New officers include S. W. Teas as First Vice President, E. L. Wildman as Second Vice President, A. C. Eschenburg as Third Vice President, with committees on Attendance, New Members, Education Health and Welfare, Safety and Sight, Civic Improvements, Community Betterment, and New Business. Meetings every Thursday at White House Cafe. visiting Lions welcome.
State Superintendent L A Woods announced the final payment on 40 450 041 per capita scholastic aid for this fiscal year. The last 2 per capita base on 1 498 483 scholastics was released this week. The total payment for this school year amounts to 27 per capita.
The Floresville Tigers defeated the Lodi Lions in a Sunday doubleheader 12 to 3 and 12 to 2. Tigers offense featured eight hits by Cox brothers and Tony Thadlee while Wagner led the second game with a double and a home run in eight trips. Voters will decide four Texas constitutional amendments on August 25, including poll tax removal during wartime, expansion of Supreme Court justices, welfare funding caps, and pay raises for legislators.
A community meeting at Floresville High School on August 15 at 2:00 p.m. will feature an A and M specialist demonstrating locker box practices. The Wilson County Farm Bureau and Floresville Ice Co co sponsor with county agents and home demonstrator Alta Marie Placke. The locker boxes are nearing opening with 188 subscribers and expected total of 245, lockers for inspection.
Captain Brad Oxford arrived in San Antonio after seventeen months with the U S Medical Corps in the European Theater. He came home on the Queen Mary and is visiting his parents in Floresville with a 30 day leave before reporting to Fort Sam Houston for reassignment. Friends in Floresville are glad to welcome him back.
The amateur rodeo at Poth last Sunday, sponsored by Bob Stoeltje, drew participants and visitors from neighboring counties. The program featured bronco riding, roping, tie-downs, and breakaway events. This marked the second successful rodeo conducted by Mr Stoeltje recently, encouraging support for home town merchants.
Wilson county GI Joe Vince Sekula served as the barber for President Truman during the Potsdam conference. The Kosciusko area native described the exchange about mail, food, and the point system, noting Truman’s curiosity about GI life and his own desire to go home. The President tipped him a dollar after the haircut.
