Death of Dr J L Mitchell in San Antonio and Floresville

Dr J L Mitchell 55, San Antonio physician, died at home in San Antonio August 2 1936. Funeral in Porter Loring mortuary with Dr J Grady Timmons officiating, burial at San Jose Park. Survived by widow Mattie, brothers W E Mitchell Karnes City J T Mitchell Karnes City and sister Zoe M Darby Houston. He held Masons and Scottish Rite memberships and practiced in San Antonio for 25 years. The Chronicle Journal extends sympathy.

Highway Worker Hurt in Truck Crash on New Route

Bradshaw a Heldenfels Bros. driver on the San Antonio highway project sustained injuries in a Wednesday afternoon truck wreck. The truck overturned after striking an obstacle, causing facial injuries and other damage before emergency crews extinguished a small fire.

Floresville Baptist Church Names New Pastor

The Floresville Baptist Church called Rev. W. E. McGraw of Wilson as pastor. He will move to Floresville around September 1 to assume duties, succeeding Rev. J. T. Howard who resigned to attend Baylor University after five years in the post.

Mississippi Reunion Delights B B Hardy in Meridien Visit

B B Hardy, a noted Marcelona resident, just returned from a two week trip to Mississippi. The highlight was a family reunion near Philadelphia in Neshoba county with three uncles and five aunts aged 67 to 91, plus over 200 kin and several friends. He recalls old times, dinner gatherings, and reports generally good crops on parts of the journey.

Kleberg Wins 14th District Victory Over Seidemann

Congressman Richard M. Kleberg of Corpus Christi defeats Judge Adolph Seidemann of New Braunfels by a 19,114 vote majority in the 14th district. The Chronicle-Journal reports complete unofficial tabulation from 19 counties following the July 26 primary, showing Kleberg with 33,769 votes to Seidemann's 14,646.

M O T Person Sr Dies At Stockdale

M O T Person Sr, 79, longtime Stockdale resident and blacksmith, died at his home Sunday after a brief illness. Funeral services were held Monday at 9 30 in Stockdale cemetery with Rev Mathis of San Antonio and several pastors officiating. Surviving are his widow, four sons and five daughters. Mr and Mrs Elmo Wright of Floresville attended the funeral. The Chronicle Journal extends sympathy to the family.

The American Legion and Auxiliary will meet at Legion Hall in Floresville next Tuesday evening August 11 at 8 o clock. Officers for the upcoming year will be elected and other important business will be transacted. All members are urged to attend.

More Than 61 000 Get Pension Checks

In Austin on July 31 the Old Age Assistance Commission mailed second monthly Old Age Pensions. Officials said 61 116 checks totaling 965 785 dollars would be mailed by Friday night, averaging 15.80 dollars each. About 59 616 people are covered, with 1 500 receiving July and August checks.

City Water Off At 10 O'clock Tonight

The City Water Department announces a planned 10 o'clock water cut off tonight for needed repairs. A single fire siren blast will signal mains shutoff with alerts given thirty minutes prior in emergencies. R.L. Wilson County has received 486 789 dollars in rental and benefit payments over the three years since the Agricultural Adjustment Administration was created, announced by H. P. Drought state director of the National Emergency Council. Local breakdown shows cotton 393 212 58, corn hog 65 004 24, peanuts 28 573 05. Texas statewide totals reach 139 412 186 46 with cotton 114 070 836 72, wheat 16 581 129 10, corn hog 6 403 258 44, sugar 705 98, rice 1 975 145 03, peanuts 381 111 19.

Bones Of Alamo Heroes Exhumed

SAN ANTONIO Texas July 31 Practically all the bones of three men believed to be William B Travis James Bowie and David Crockett were exhumed yesterday and today reposing in a vault at San Fernando Cathedral They were buried under the original altar by Captain Juan Seguin after the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836 Excavated remains ranged from charred fragments to a jaw bone with teeth intact Some fabric bits and an officer 39 s epaulette were found The bones will remain in the cathedral vault until Archbishop Drossaerts returns for a ceremony placing the remains in a Cathedral niche

State Highway Department Accepts Completion Of No 16 Project Here

The Democratic executive committee of Wilson county met last Saturday at the courthouse to canvass the July 25 primary returns. W. T. Swift presided as county chairman. the official count showed only minor changes from the prior tabulation. DeWitt Murray was elected chairman and S. W. Teas secretary at the county convention. About 25 delegates from across the county were chosen to attend the State Democratic Convention on Sept. 8. no resolutions were passed and the delegates were instructed to vote as a unit.

Mrs Korbell's Father Dies En Route to Centennial

Mr. E M Thomas age 72 father of Mrs A B Korbell died of a stroke near Floresville on August 1 1936 while traveling to the Texas Centennial. He lived two hours at Providence Sanitarium Naco. Body shipped to San Antonio then McComb Mississippi for burial. Family from McComb drove to McComb. funeral held Tuesday at 10 am. Floresville friends extend sympathy to the Korbell family.

Successful Church Night At Methodist Showcases Talks

A well attended Methodist church night featured three excellent talks by Miss Carmen Connally Mrs Robert Wise mans and E L Whitsett and a clear duet by Miss Johnnie Merchant and Rev R K Heacock. The program included 16 to 20 old beloved songs and cold punch, creating an evening of education inspiration and fellowship. A similar event is planned for next Wednesday inviting more Sunday school teachers and church leaders to attend.

Bonus Bonds Bring $83,690,000 To Texas

Washington August 3 More than 54 million in cash has been distributed to Texas World War veterans in 40 days since payments of soldiers adjusted service certificates began. About 65 percent of bonds sent to Texas have been cashed, with bonds totaling 15 351 900 issued to Star veterans by July 25.

Four Mile Stretch Highway 16 Approved For Acceptance

Construction on the four mile stretch of Highway 16 rerouting the San Antonio Corpus Christi highway north of Floresville was approved for acceptance by the State Highway Department. Garrett, the resident engineer, and Heldenfels Bros. oversaw the project with Eddie B. Roan as superintendent and H. T. Bailey as assistant. The project employed over 300 men and more than 71,000 man hours, costing about $28,000 in payroll through a local bank. The new link reduces distance by about two miles and aims to eliminate many danger points in the current route. Final state and federal acceptance is expected soon, with paving date not yet known.

Red Cross Chapter Meets Tuesday At 4 30

The Wilson County Red Cross Chapter will meet next Tuesday afternoon August 11 at 4 30 in the Red Cross Rest Room in this city. Officers for the ensuing year will be elected. Plans for the Annual Roll Call Drive and other important matters will be discussed. Executive committee officers and Red Cross members are invited. Mrs. Wm Reese county chairman will preside and hopes for a large turnout.

Precinct 7 Votes Dry Saturday in Special Election

In Justice Precinct No 7 a special election last Saturday decided on beer and wine sales. The precinct voted dry by a margin of 47 votes, with detailed unofficial tallies showing Stockdale 143 for and 248 against, Denhawken 69 for, and High Prairie 39 for a total of 255 votes in the county clerk’s returns.
