Floresville Sutherland Springs Bond and Tax Rate Vote

Voters in the Floresville Consolidated Independent School District will vote tomorrow Saturday August 7 at Floresville and Sutherland Springs on the assumption of bonded indebtedness and on setting a maximum tax rate of 1.25 per 100 dollars. The election, held at City Hall and the School House, aims to complete the consolidation of the two districts with little opposition expected. If both measures fail, the consolidation cannot proceed.

Football Practice Starts August 15

Under the new State Interscholastic League rule football practice will begin August 15 at Floresville High School. Morning sessions run 8 to 9 30 and evening sessions 7 to 9 00. Equipment will be issued August 16 at 1 00 PM at the Field House. Lettermen and other interested athletes are urged to attend the first day. Coach Ralph Starnes expresses hope for continued community support and good spirit.

Fairview Baptist Church Dedicates New Building Next Sunday

Fairview Baptist Church, rebuilt after last year’s tropical storm, invites former members and locals to a homecoming and dedication on Sunday August 8. A.M. Sunday School from the pulpit by Rev. A. M. Wester, 11 A.M. homecoming service led by Rev. J. W. Rives, lunch at 12:15, 3:00 P.M. dedication service with Rev. F. B Williams officiating and Rev. Roy Lyons preaching.

Local groups to sponsor Peanut Festival queen contestants

Three unnamed local organizations plan to sponsor the three entrants for the 1948 Peanut Festival Queen contest. Sponsorship will be decided by drawing lots, with full sponsorship names published on Friday. Additional groups may enter by 10 a.m. Monday, August 9, and entries close September 8 at 5 p.m.

Karnes-Wilson Draft Board Formed in Karnes District 78

Governor Beauford Jester appointed select draft boards statewide to implement the new draft law. Karnes and Wilson counties are District 78 with Ed J. Dworaczyk C E Massey Kenedy and W H Cale named as members and C E Massey chairman W H Cale secretary. Karnes City will host meetings, with registration provisions to be announced later. W H Cale of Wilson County is a Floresville businessman and WWII veteran and former American Legion officer.

Youth Caravan Ends Tonight At El Mesias Church

Friday evening marks the closing consecration service for the Methodist Youth Caravan from Abilene after a ten week summer campaign. Four trained workers have led recreational and religious activities for Floresville youths with strong church cooperation and broad attendance. All are welcome to attend the closing program at El Mesias Church tonight.

Kerosene Stove Causes Fire at Cordova Home

About 5 p.m. at the end of August a kerosene stove exploded and set fire to Joe Cordova s home. Two small boys living there quickly extinguished the blaze with a garden hose before firefighters arrived. Firemen warn that hot weather makes grass and trash fires easily sparked and potentially serious.

For home use, treat ant colonies with two to three percent chlordane solution. Apply a small amount at the entrance of each colony to disrupt nesting and control the infestation.

Salvation Army Fund Drive Nears Conclusion in Floresville

Walter J. Hayt reports Floresville fund drive progress with about half the prior year’s total raised by Thursday. The drive runs until Monday night with contributions accepted by mail or at First City National Bank. County committee includes Dr William Oxford, L A Campbell, Mayor Clyde Fahrenthold, Mayor John E Wheeler, and Sam Fore Jr. The Salvation Army program is urged for support nationwide.

Festival Queen Contest Growing In Interest

By the end of the second week of balloting Betty Jean Johnson leads with 600 votes followed by Rose Marie-Raska with 562 and Bernice Flieller with 619 in a tight Peanut Festival contest. Support your choice by voting at the ballot boxes around the city.

Sheehy Named County Trustee At Large In New District

J T Sheehy a Floresville business leader was elected County Trustee At Large by unanimous vote amid a July 27 meeting of the Wilson County Board of Trustees. The board met again July 28 approving transfers and district groupings including Pleasant Hill No 52 and La Vernia, merging Kicaster No 7 with La Vernia Independent to form a rural district.

Democratic Convention Endorses Party Nominees From President to Constable

Wilson County Democrats met in the county courthouse with about 41 attendees to endorse Democratic nominees from president to constable. A contentious chairmanship contest ended with Fitzgerald elected permanent chair as delegates debated credentials from precinct meetings. Governor Beauford Jester urged support for party nominees and a unit vote was set for the state convention.

Charges Filed Against 6 In Poth Robbery Case

Six suspects were charged on July 22 in Floresville after a burglary at the Koldzie Poultry House and Cold Storage Plant in Poth. A rear-window entry, safe removal, and a chase ending in a creek near San Antonio tied the crimes to Path and Kerrville incidents.
