Lieut. Vicente T. Ximenes and Lieut. George F. Freyer, both trained at Ellington Field, receive the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism in North Africa and Europe. Freyer crawled to nose guns and repelled attacks after his B 17 was hit during a May raid, then steered to safety. Ximenes, formerly a UT baseball and basketball player, was a bombardier on a high altitude Tunisia attack when engine damage occurred.

Sheriff McAda Dies. Funeral Planned in Jourdanton
Lorenzo Dow McAda aged 65 of Jourdanton died Wednesday in a local hospital after medical treatment in San Antonio. He served as Atascosa County sheriff for 26 years and is survived by his widow Belle Pipes McAda, daughter Mrs. D. R. McIntyre of Shreveport, sisters Mrs. Robert Smith and Minnie Dee McAda of Del Rio, and brother William McAda of Tucson. Funeral services are set for Friday at 4 p.m. in Jourdanton.
