Governor Sterling outlined a limited special session to consider relief for highway bonds and urged leaving state employee readjustments to the next legislature. He said the session could finish in under a week and would follow the Democratic state convention in Lubock on Sept. 13.
Be advised on the November 8 election by nine proposed constitutional amendments. The measures cover university funds, tax land redemption, debt release limits, military voting, seawall taxes, voter qualifications, homestead exemptions, tax collector merges with assessor, and the Texas Centennial proposal.
Official returns of the primary election held Saturday July 28 in Wilson County appear on page 6 of The Chronicle Journal. Certified by County Clerk J T Houston the list covers county results and shows total votes for each candidate. County Chairman Dewitt notes the Democratic Executive Committee members.
Floresville Post 38 will hold its regular August meeting at the courthouse next Monday August 8. Delegates’ reports from the State Convention at Corpus Christi will be heard. Hal V. Warren is Post Commander.
Everybody is invited to the Leap Year Dance hosted at Hermann Sons Hall with a community turnout expected. The event aims to bring residents together for a festive evening with music, dancing, and socializing in a local venue.
Mrs Miriam A Ferguson led the first primary campaign in Texas with the highest expenses, reporting about 4614 dollars in expenditures and contributions. Hunter followed with 4862.36 dollars spent and no contributions, according to final expense accounts filed with the Secretary of State.
In Gonzales Texas the county executive committee certified the sheriff's race results showing incumbent Sam Hart defeated former Sheriff B Neighbors by eight votes after an unofficial count had Neighbors ahead by one. The official tally secured the contest and affirmed Hart's victory.
A Texas appeal urges voters to consider the Railroad Commissioner race on August 27. It cites the commission's oversight of oil and gas properties valued at over 3.25 billion dollars, including pipelines and transport firms, and argues the position deeply affects the state’s economy and employment.
St Anns Catholic Church at Kosciusko holds its annual picnic and barbecue on the church grounds Sunday August 14. Thousands of pounds of barbecue sausage and other eats will be served. Dinner starts at 11 am with supper from 6 to 8 pm. Attendance prizes and amusements planned. The Shiner Band will provide music day and night. All are invited.
The Texas Weekly declines editorial campaign participation in elections. It explains that if James Ferguson were eligible and running, it would not editorially engage. The paper supports Governor Sterling overall, citing proxy government concerns and constitutional limits on office holding.
Floresville American Legion Auxiliary members Ida Mae Murray Lallah Warren and others attended the state convention in Corpus Christi. The Floresville unit won the blue ribbon for best scrap book and received honorable mention for unit activities reports. Mrs Elbert W Franklin was elected 14th District Chairman and will report on August 9.
The Methodist and Presbyterian churches announce a ten day Vacation Church School from August 15 to 26 for primary ages seven and eight and juniors nine to twelve. The programs emphasize learning by doing with balanced study and activities and invite all church members to attend. Rev. C W Solomon and Rev. A A Carter encourage participation.
Final tabulation by the Texas Election Bureau shows 931,856 votes in the Democratic first primary. Miriam Ferguson leads Governor Sterling by 102,487. Ferguson 387,091, Sterling 284,604, Hunter 211,690, scattering 48,471. Expected total near 940,000 from 253 of 254 counties.
The State College Male Quartette of San Marcos will sing a sacred concert at the Methodist Church in Floresville on Sunday morning August 7 at 11:00 o clock. Members are C. L. Turbeville Robert Stroble Billy Doyle and Bill Seale with Homer F Springfield as accompanist and manager. The group aims to deliver a strong message in a highly anticipated performance.
The revival in progress at Marcelona Baptist Church will end Sunday night with services nightly at 8 o'clock. Crowds attend and strong interest is shown as Rev. Willie Moffett of Beacon Hill Baptist Church in San Antonio conducts the event.
