Floresville launches eight team Floresville Amateur Softball League with an August 8 dedication at the Tiger Football Field fairgrounds. The band leads a parade before a doubleheader and ceremonial program, with 10 cent adults and 6 cent children admission. Teams and opponents to be announced.
A jury found George Keilmann not guilty of the murder of Jesus Quintero at an Elmendorf tavern on January 22, 1938. The verdict was announced Saturday night by Special District Judge K. K. after the jury reported readiness at 10 p.m.
Floresville High School principal and athletic coach Coach Irwin is in San Antonio this week attending the Southwest Texas Coaches School. The event is sponsored by Bennie Strickland of San Antonio. Noted coaches are providing instruction. See COACH IRWIN on Page 8.
The Floresville National Farm Loan Association re elected officers and directors after a July 25 stockholders meeting at Poth. John H. Myers was returned as president and Wm Beutnagel as vice president. R A Wiseman was re elected secretary treasurer with Miss Carmen Connally as acting secretary treasurer. Members were also elected to the board for the coming year.
A farewell social on the First Baptist Church lawn honored Rev W E McGraw and his family. Members of the church and other Christian friends gathered to show appreciation for his three years as pastor in Floresville. His departure is marked by regard for his preaching and presence.
The Chronicle Journal notes the death of Richard Houck at his farm home Wednesday morning. A singing meet is announced at Marcelena Baptist Church next Sunday afternoon August 6 at 2 30 inviting all who sing or enjoy good singing to attend and meet friends.
Kendall County Land Use Planning Board members visited Camp Kleberg in Floresville to study pasture and farm conservation work. County Agent Wayne L. Sigler led the delegation with Tec Morris and agronomists M D Stanford J W Tompkins, plus County Agent F C Eliott. They examined multiple farms and praised the camp for practical soil and water conservation, educational facilities, and its role as a statewide demonstration camp serving Southwest Texas.
The Chamber of Commerce held a Tuesday night meeting at the courthouse as the membership totals rise to ninety. The membership committee, led by Chairman See, has done a splendid job, with the session focusing on business interests.
Women of Wilson County and 4-H Club girls joined an all day rally at Sutherland Springs. The event featured a Well Child to School morning program with participation from club members, their husbands and children.
Ray Lee of Austin visited Floresville to attend a Wilson County meeting of farmers and business leaders. The informal round-table discussed retaining the CCC Soil Conservation Camp to continue the county's substantial program of work and its recorded success. Local citizens presented figures and arguments supporting retention.
The Poth Farmers League announces a meeting titled To Meet Kuarod slated for Tuesday night August 8. The announcement notes community concerns and the league's plans to discuss local farming issues.
The Texas Company warehouse west of the depot was robbed between 3 30 and 4 30 Saturday morning. A truck loaded 97 oil cases and 25 grease cases, valued around 500 dollars. Robbers twisted a hasp and forced entry after prying a back window. Henry Hesskew saw a truck. authorities, including sheriff and state patrol, investigated. Loss partly covered by insurance.
Elgin Ford 51, Floresville resident from a well known local family, died Wednesday afternoon in an automobile crash between Gregory and Corpus Christi. Family members rushed to Corpus Christi for the body. Funeral services were held at Murray Funeral Home with Rev. A M Foster officiating. Burial followed in Floresville Cemetery. Ford had lived with his mother in Floresville, worked on a WPA project, and previously lived in the Rio Grande Valley and San Antonio.
Floresville reports a robust response to the Wilson District Boy Scouts of America fundraising drive led by L. F. Spruce. On Thursday July 27 only two individuals refused membership citing financial reasons as eight workers spent the day contacting potential donors and securing support for Scouting.
A rodeo is scheduled for next Sunday at Sutherland Springs starting at 10 30 a m Aug 6 featuring bull tie down breakaway calf roping and double mugging with events listed for the day.
Heavy rain swept most of Wilson County on Wednesday afternoon with totals ranging from a half inch to over two inches in places. The county overall saw benefits, though not everywhere as heavily as initially reported, with Wilson County recording about 2.10 inches in some spots and Dewees noted at 1.75 inches.
Death occurred early Wednesday August 2 for Richard Houck a longtime Wilson County resident and statewide farm program leader. He felt unwell after delivering milk at the local creamery then suffered heart attacks and died at 2 15 a m. Funeral at the family farm west of Floresville conducted by Rev W H Anderson with burial in Floresville Cemetery.
Judge Cardwell announces a public hearing at Floresville courthouse on August 24 at 2:00 p.m. to consider Wilson County's application for a Soil and Water District. The petition, signed by 250 landowners, outlines district needs and tentative metes and bounds. The notice will be published countywide.
Miss Dortha Bird and Rex Swift were married Saturday evening July 29 at 6 30 in Denver Heights Methodist Church on Denver Boulevard San Antonio. Rev Harold S Goodenough officiated in the presence of a small gathering.
