The Camp Ranch Tomcats swept a Sunday doubleheader at Three Oaks diamond. In the opener the score was 0 0 after nine innings before the Tomcats pushed across four runs to win 4 to 1. The second game remained tight as Ranch Tomcats prevailed 6 to 0.
Floresville youths Pfc. Alex Torres Pfc. Anastacio Montoya and T5 Enrique Trevino of the 142nd Infantry, 86th Texas Division, Seventh Army in Germany receive the Bronze Arrowhead for participation in the D-Day era invasions. The 36th Division fought in Italy and Southern France, with notable battles at San Pietro, Cassino, Rapido River, Anzio, Montelimar, and in the Vosges and Siegfried Line, totaling about 400 days of combat across Europe.
Diversified Wilson county continues shipping watermelons and popcorn as the season winds down. By Thursday morning 1126 rail car loads of melons had left the county with an estimated 100 more by truck. Floresville shipped 476 melon cars while Stockdale had 660. A few stragglers may still move from Floresville and Stockdale, with Stockdale expecting 25 to 80 more cars. Floresville had shipped 20 carloads of popcorn and was loading two more.
Eighth Army reports Pfc Gilbert T. Romero of Floresville has been awarded the Good Conduct Medal for behavior efficiency and fidelity. Inducted at Fort Sam Houston in January 1942, he has served overseas for a year and holds the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a star and the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with three campaign stars. His father Andalecio F. Romero lives on Route 5.
Floresville and Wilson County saw a light rain on Tuesday night, totaling about 0.85 inch. Other parts of the county reported varying amounts with no heavy rainfall recorded. The event provided a brief shower that was not needed by most areas.
A recess session of the District Court in Floresville last Saturday, presided by District Judge H. D. Baryow, saw several divorce cases disposed. Pablita Gonzales versus Jesus Villegas resulted in a custody award for the minors. Mrs Ora R Newman guardian versus The Texas and Pacific Railway Co settled by agreement with a $6,000 judgment for the plaintiff.
The sub district Methodist Youth Fellowship meeting gathered Monday at Cibolo Park near Stockdale starting 5:30 PM. A swimming picnic and events entertained a large crowd while an inspirational program by Floresville participants and Roger Deschner of San Antonio led the session.
Captain Andy Hunter arrives in Savannah after 80 day leave, completing 61 missions with the 8th Air Corps in the European theater. He wears the Presidential Unit Citation and other decorations, with Heidelberg among the cities affected before V-E Day. Hunter plans to spend his leave with parents Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Hunter.
Fire Department sponsorship at Hermann Sons Hall in Poth for Sunday night August 5. Texas Tumbleweeds, San Antonio radio orchestra, provide music. Proceeds aid the fire department. A $50 tailor made suit given away. Admission 74 cents for men, 25 cents for ladies. Everyone invited.
A WOAI San Antonio Farm and Ranch segment highlighted turkey farming with L. N. Savoy and Roland George from Wilson County. County Agent J. W. Brumbelow introduced the producers, who detailed growing turkeys for eight years, starting with 340 poults and yielding 299 at a 12 percent market, then expanding to about 300 annually before selling 400 in a later year, while sharing insights on feeding and diverse farm use.
Floresville news notes a countywide highway beautification program sponsored by the Lions Club in honor of World War veterans. Miss Alta Marie Placke is named county chairwoman with committee members J W Brumbelow, S J Irwin, and B L Wildman. The program, backed by the Highway Department and state lawmakers, aims to plant native shrubs or trees along roadsides as a memorial civic project. Farmers, clubs, and individuals are urged to cooperate across Floresville County.
Lieut Col Tom C Morris former 838th Infantry executive officer in European Theater of Operations arrived in San Antonio last Wednesday with his wife and their eight year old child. They came Friday to spend hours with Floresville friends where he previously served as Soil Conservationist at Camp Richard M Kleberg CCC Camp. They are welcomed back and he will report for reassignment after a 30 day leave.
The Wilson County Board of Trustees will meet in Floresville on Wednesday August 8 at 10 am at the office of County Superintendent S J Irwin. They will pass on school transfer applications and transact other business as may arise. Patronize Home Town Merchants.
Private John Henry Tieken of San Antonio Texas died in action at Okinawa on May 20 1945. He was born March 31 1926 and enlisted September 1944 overseas by February last year. He was 19 years 1 month 20 days at death. Memorial service held July 29 at St John Lutheran San Antonio with relatives from Floresville and nearby towns attending. He survived by parents a brother and a sister and grandparents. The community extends sympathy.
For nearly two centuries after its discovery Texas remained without an official name. Early explorers and settlers debated designations before a formal title was settled, shaping regional identity and subsequent maps and records.
Bert Postert, 11 months old, died within hours after inhaling coal oil at the Carmichael farm near Fairview west of Floresville. An attempt to secure a pul motor from Floresville failed and Eve was done for the child.
