The exemption board meets Wednesday to review the first 56 draftees and conclude the ee examination. Fifty drafted men are notified to appear Tuesday for physicals. The board will sit Saturday to decide exemption claims for the initial 56 called.
In Wilson County 50 additional men were summoned after a belief that more than 56 were needed to meet the quota. A notice was sent to 20 men and 50 more drafted men to appear in Floresville on Tuesday morning August 7, 1917 at 8 o'clock for a physical examination at the office of Dr. John V. Blake.
Dr John V Blake longtime Floresville physician and Wilson county health officer and former Floresville Chronicle Journal owner received a commission as Captain in the Medical Reserve Corps from the War Department in Washington. He will likely be called into service around September 1 and his appointment surprised many in the area.
A battery unit and local citizens gathered in Wilson County Court House to honor Battery D with a charity chicken dinner. Capt Murray urged funding a county boys training camp fund, forming a five member committee to solicit subscriptions in each precinct. Battery D planned a drill and mobilization into federal service the following Sunday, August 5.
The W. C. T. U. will meet at the Methodist church next Thursday afternoon August 9 at 5 p m. All members are urged to attend.
A Floresville rifle club facing loss of its equipment must reorganize immediately. A Washington letter urges the local charter members to act now to secure funds and keep the club active. The group reportedly holds 4,000 rounds of ammunition and 10 late model items, but leaders Williams and Smith have moved away.
Mr Bradley and manager Cryer report on Bradwin farm nine years into ownership with 500 acres planted to feterita and maize yielding 5 6 thousand bushels of corn. About 200 acres of mile maize gave fair returns, silos filled, and fall planting continues as weather allows. Carl Johnson family returned from Boerne visit.
A large social at the Dewees residence featured numerous attendees from Campbellton Beatrice Peeler Mary Naoma Ruth Tom Eva Butler Teresa Martin and others. Guests included W E Tom Jourdan Campbell Ed Campbell John H McDaniel August Laas Clyde Griffith O L Ezzell J C Houston John H Mayes S W Houston Henry King Thomas Speigpatte and many more from Beatrice Campbellton and Floresville in a genteel evening of dancing and conversation.
