Wilson County voters produced a record turnout in a hotly contested Saturday primary. O'Daniel carried the county for overall lead, with heavy participation in sheriff and county races. Governor and state race tallies and complete precinct returns appear on page 4.
The Chronicle Journal reports a large turnout for the primary election returns at the Floresville courthouse last Saturday night. The district courtroom was full with many standing for hours until about 5 30 AM. Attendees praised the service and thanked courthouse officials, district clerk M M Hughes and other named organizers and staff for their roles.
Florian Rolenda, a farmer near Floresville, found a three foot bull snake swallowing a two foot rattlesnake at dawn. He carried the scene to the Chronicle Journal office, where onlookers watched as the bull snake finished the unusual meal in about 50 minutes. The rattlesnake had five rattles and was nearly as thick as the bull snake, which appeared unharmed afterward.
Miss Daisy Whitman of Benavides returns home Thursday after visiting Miss Johnnie Merchant who hosted her for a week. Miss Johnnie accompanied her home and returned the next day.
Pettus Texas July 31 Senator Morris Roberts thanked voters of the 18th district for leading the ticket in last Saturdays primary to seek re election to the State Senate He will face Fred Mauritz in the August 24 run off while Joe Caldwell was eliminated with 85 536 votes cast Roberts led in seven of thirteen counties Mauritz led in five Caldwell carried his home county of owing is the complete unaffiliated tally by county.

Cotton arrivals stay brisk despite heat with Floresville gins at 57 bales by Thursday noon and Dewees and Loma gins nearby reporting 30 bales. If weather holds, Wilson County could exceed last year’s ginned total as season continues.
Wilson County candidate L L Holstein leads Karnes County rival Fred Klingeman in unofficial returns, forcing a run off for Representative from the 79th District. Vote tallies show Holstein 1695 to Klingeman 1008 in Wilson and 1001 to 119 in Karnes with other names listed among totals.
Floresville youths depart Saturday with Headquarters Company 138th Field Artillery Texas National Guard San Antonio for three weeks of training army games and maneuvers in Louisiana Outcome depends on participation for Jack Spruce Clark and others from Floresville to train in Louisiana with the unit.
Martha Ray Gandy, Robstown native and former A. I. College student, elected to lead the Homemaking Department at Floresville High School. She previously taught at Victoria High School and succeeds Mrs. Elizabeth Dillon who resigned to become Home Demonstration Agent of Hunt County. Gandy is praised as a strong scholar and active community figure.
Floresville Motor Company reports ten Wilson County youths awarded scholarships by the National Farm Youth Foundation. Over six months they study farm management and engineering, receive local classes and practical training, and may pursue jobs paying up to 150 dollars a month. Foundation is backed by Ferguson Sherman Manufacturing of Dearborn with Henry Ford and Edsel Ford cooperation. Recipients include Elton Krebs, Richard Trappe Jr, W. P. Schwertlich, Forrest A Simmons, Walter V. Billimek, Walton Pfeil, John Svoboda Jr, Virgil Alton Marsh, William R. Yeager, and Edgar Ehlers, all of Floresville or nearby Stockdale.
Mrs Chas B Diltz wife of the Floresville Methodist pastor left last Sunday for a several weeks visit to her brothers in Los Angeles California Rev Diltz accompanied her as far as San Antonio.
Unofficial counts from the 14th District show Kleberg leading with strong margins as McMullen county reports are missing. Kleberg polled 81,132 votes to 20,595 for two opponents, a lead exceeding ten thousand, with other counties reporting a favorable margin for the incumbent.
Marshall Henry Leigh Jr., 4 years 10 months 16 days, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Leigh of Marcelona, died July 25, 1940, at Blake Hospital after a 12 day illness. Funeral at Sutherland Springs Baptist Church with Rev. J W Rives. interment in Sutherland Springs Cemetery. Survived by parents and Mr. Jimmie Dale Leigh. The Chronicle Journal extends sympathy.
A group from the Grass Nursery division of the U S Department of Agriculture toured Floresville on Tuesday morning after a two day San Antonio meeting and visits to Adams Ranch and Bandera. They were en route to A I College in Kingsville to view the Grass Nursery project on the college farm underway for over a year.
On the eve of the primary election and with his name on the ballot as a candidate for County Commissioner of Precinct No 3, F Tewes died removing a well known La Vernia citizen. He had moved to Wilson County where he spent his remaining years and was regarded as a dependable, esteemed man.
A speaker will address Wilson County residents in Floresville this Friday afternoon at 4 30. The event aims to discuss local concerns and community issues.
Local American Legion post elects officers for the upcoming year with Schultz as Commander and Lohse as Vice Commander. Plans made for a barbecue during the Peanut Festival and committees appointed.
Hugo Hierholzer living west of Floresville ginned a bale of cotton at the Houston Lichnovsky Gin on Thursday. The bale weighed 1230 pounds of net lint and produced a 536-pound bale. The Harper cottonseed was planted and the ginner calls it one of the best bales they have ever ginned.
L. Morgan Williams of Jourdanton was re nominated District Attorney over H. H. Schuenemann of Kenedy in the primary. The Chronicle Journal notes Williams carried Atascosa Frio LaSalle and Wilson counties while Schuenemann led Karnes. Karnes County results were Schuenemann 2147 Williams 1536.
Mrs. R. T. Woolsey aged 79 years 6 months 1 day died in Bay City Texas Friday July 26 1940 at 7 50 P M after illness Funeral arrangements were under local direction and services were held in Bay City with burial Friday in the Oak Hill Cemetery Primitive rites noted by the family and church members through this obituary notice
J T Sheehy Floresville peanut buyer returned from Gorman Texas where 500 representatives from Texas New Mexico Oklahoma Arkansas and Louisiana attended the Southwestern Peanut Growers Association annual meeting He reported optimism for the year and noted plans to open a 400 ton bonded Peanut Warehouse under the Co-Operative system to aid Wilson County growers The meeting highlighted the growing success of the Peanut Growers Co-Op over the past two years and its expanding impact on the Southwest peanut industry.
