Jump Rope for Heart Fundraiser at Floresville Elementary

Floresville Elementary held a March 13 1981 Jump Rope for Heart event at the Intermediate School gym to raise funds for the American Heart Association. Students pledged per minute, with top fundraisers earning T-shirts windbreakers and a jogger suit for the winning team. total donations reached 2483.25 dollars.

Wilson County Livestock Judging Teams Sweep District Contest

Wilson County Livestock Judging Teams dominated the District 14 Livestock Judging Contest at Texas A&M University on April 4. The Junior Team featured Sharon Rippert and Wright, in their first contest, while the Senior Team of Tamela Rutledge Priscilla Rutledge Heath Orth and Jeffery Palitza placed second, qualifying for the State Contest in June and with Tamela finishing fourth individual.

Bike-A-Thon aims to raise funds for cancer fight

George Mints, chairman, outlines plans for the annual bike-a-thon in the county. Riders solicit sponsors per mile, with merchants donating prizes in divisions like oldest rider and top fundraisers. Prizes range from gift certificates to savings bonds and bicycles, plus plaques for outstanding riders. Route mirrors last year from the courthouse to FM 536, FM 2505, Highway 97, and back, with rest stops, police protection, and medical aid. Donations are tax deductible to support cancer research.

Pedestrian Dies After Car Pedestrian Collision in Floresville

Mike Saldana Martinez died from injuries after being struck by a southbound car on Highway 181 near E Street headed toward Arrow Self Service. Driver David Epperson of Boerne faced involuntary manslaughter charges, released on $1600 bond as case moves to the Grand Jury. Officer Profilio Talamantez Jr. led the investigation.

Peanut Bill Clears First Hurdle

Marvin Roemer of the Wilson County Peanut Growers Group says Congress man Charlie Rose backed peanut legislation reported favorably by the House Agriculture Subcommittee on April 8. The bill extends the price support system to 1982 1985 with quotas, sets 1982 support at national average costs no less than 631 per ton, and outlines adjustments for 1983 to 1985. It would modify existing provisions to improve farm and market operations and allows grower contracts with handlers for exports and edible markets. The measure faces full House Agriculture Committee action and possible May consideration. Senator Jesse Helms introduced a Senate farm bill with a peanut section, with Senate action anticipated late April.
