County results show Landis winning by 120 votes in Carroll County with Republican alignment. Democrat Reed securing the statewide tally along with two commissioners and county treasurer and recorder positions reported as closed.
Tuesday's vote surprised candidates and voters with results diverging from a 30 day poll. National ticket around 220 for Roosevelt, a Republican county gain. Landis wins county by about 120 with a county ticket ahead. Democrats elect trustees in Burlington Carrollton Jackson Medi Poe south solid for Parker. Todiana nets Roosevelt by about 60,000. Landis carries all counties in the district and is re-elected by about 6,000. Monroe township shows Landis slightly behind national totals.
Bernard Toole, 28, brother of Delphi Town Clerk Robert Toole, was found dead beside the Wabash tracks east of Burrows. An inquest heard of a bruised head and broken leg, with officials ruling death an accident. It remained unclear if he fell or if he was pushed from a passing train.
Watson Simmons, 19, was arrested at his Camden home by George Benson and deputy Wesley Gwinn on a forger y charge. He pleaded guilty to procuring money under false pretenses by forging two checks on Camden Bank blanks and was sentenced to Jeffersonville prison for two to fourteen years. An Idaville football player, Charles Gadd, 21, died from internal hemorrhage after a practice injury. the Idaville team will disband.
Delphi Herald notes Chas B Landis re elected to Congress. It also reports two prosperous men arriving by train from Chicago, hiring John Melvin for a southward drive to inspect Deer Creek crossings for an interurban line toward Flora, then returning on the 5 38 train. Also mentions unusually large potatoes and a 25 inch beet weigh 6 pounds. Wagoner trial set for tomorrow after a Kokomo forgery arrest with continuance granted.
Delphi town buzzes after Fred Breeze, principal of Delphi high school, is arrested for assault and battery in a case prepared by James B. Waddell. Breeze pleads guilty, pays a 12.50 fine, and faces calls to resign as tension rises at the school.
Dr E F Kendall of Callane and Kendall plans to move from Flora to Medaryville to set up a dental practice. He and his family have won esteem in the community, and his departure is met with regret. Kendall is praised as an expert and a fine citizen.
Mr and Mrs Alexander Spivey celebrated their golden wedding anniversary west of town on Friday of last week. The couple marked sixty years of marriage with neighbors and family in attendance.
Commissioners Clark and Burk deny authorization to Godlove Behm to collect back taxes and warn taxpayers to ignore his notices. The Flora Lecture Course launches December 6 with Hawthorn Musical Club from Boston as star performers, followed by Harmony Company January 5 and other events through March 34 with tickets on sale November 22 at Myer & Eaton.
A teenage rider, son of Cal Weida, tried a homemade loop at Moran. He drove the contraption, became unconscious on impact, and sustained a broken arm plus other injuries. He is unlikely to attempt the stunt again soon, if ever.
William Kromm, fireman from Rockfield now in Logansport, was firing on the Vandalia Expo train when it ran off the track near Fort Wayne at high speed. Engineer Deikman also escaped unharmed. No serious injuries reported. Kromm is noted as a popular and efficient fireman on the Vandalia system.
The Flora town board extends tax payment to Monday night the 21st and warns a 10 percent penalty on delinquencies after that date. Upcoming Spring actions will apply to all property in Flora Ward, regardless of owner, with delinquent taxes to be sold as required by law. Delinquent taxes are rising, with this year’s figure described as alarming at 49. Aged woman Hannah Winters of Rossville dies at 81 from heart disease while preparing dinner. She had long resided in Rossville and was well known locally. Public worship at Christian Church announced with services at 10:45 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Sermon topics address Temptation Through Appetite and The Perils of Young Men, part of a sermon series. Jonh Witttinase to attend the world’s fair this week.
A local merger of Flora and Bringhurst cooperative telephone interests collapses under antitrust concerns. Ten investors lent $11,160 to Miller, gaining control and proposing to buy assets of the cooperative for about $5,000. Flora Telephone Co will operate anew, keeping rates, expanding lines, and linking with county exchanges. Harry Hanna, former Enterprise Sentinel staffer, visits family and notes favorable business prospects.
The town board, in its monthly session, increased Flora's retail liquor license fee from 100 to 150 dollars. Officials believe higher costs will reduce saloons and push toward regular licensing. Separately, Inaiaoa's September public health data show 2,663 deaths nationwide at a rate of 12.2, compared with 13.4 last September.
