Townsfolk face major overhauls as Flora adopts new statutes. Taxes will be collected by the county treasurer after spring installments. the county will remit funds to the town treasurer. Officers shift to four year terms and licenses move from treasurer to town clerk. A jail is required and delinquent sales handled countywide.
A list of prohibitions includes smoking and giving away cigarettes, possessing cigarette papers, marrying while afflicted by tuberculosis or other infectious diseases, or without affidavit of ability to support a family. It also bans underage attendance at dance halls with liquor, requires compliance before saloon licenses, and prohibits running a private bank unless following state bank laws.
The Flora community faces new tax laws with a strict May 7 deadline for spring installments. Delinquent status will apply to the entire year if payment is not received by then. Also noted is the 94th anniversary celebration of Mrs. Catharine Stauffer at John Stauffer’s home near Galveston with mostly guests over eighty.
It notes Mrs George Hamer and son Oscar visiting her sister in Frankfort over the weekend. Several residents are listed as ill or recovering, including Grace Robiabaugh and Rebecca Snyder. Ira Maxwell plans to leave the P I around Sept 1, and Miss Pollie Edna Snyder Ada Robinbaugh Neva Cox Dora Bates visit Ruth Jett. Local road work restarts while Jacob Metz and Jacob Dickerson move into town and Harve Clawson relocates his store to the Thompson building refreshed with paint.
John C. O Connor returns to his Delphi home about two o clock Sunday to find two men burglarizing his house. They flee after being discovered and a gunshot is fired. O Connor pursues them a half mile along the Monon tracks, but loses their trail. The burglars steal a gold chain, two gold bracelets and other articles. Similar break ins are reported at Rossville with small sums taken. Barbara Cromer sustains a broken arm from a fall on East Main Street. Dr Lyons treats the injury.
A 10 year old, Frank Chapman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Chapman of near Delphi, was killed when walnut frame timbers fell during dismantling at the Orlando McDonald farm. He was struck on the head as the pieces crushed his skull and died at home after an ambulance ride and medical care.
Jesse Johnson of Bringhurst and Bessie Bishop of Cutler wed at the Cutler Presbyterian church parsonage with Rev. O L Prentice officiating. Johnson owns the South Center Street Meat Market in Flora and the couple will reside in the Kearns home in Flora. Flora welcomes the newlyweds.
Sedalia locals recount visitors and family events with many names. Bertha Grubbs returns from father in Sedalia to Indianapo lis. Ida Boyles of Dayton and Mrs Ross Elliott visit Parks Robison’s family. Mrs Kate Coapstick returns from Logansport. several residents attend commencements and visit relatives across towns including Frankfort Monticello Moran Cutler and Flora.
Bringhurst resident Ethel Beakney recalls extended Indianapolis visit. The Misses Audrey and Mattie Briggs returned home last Thursday after their stay in Indiana. Dot Trent started spring classes on Monday. Mrs. Sarah E. Davis undertakes improvements to her property. Joe Kingery and family visited Fred Woods and family Sunday. Harley Clingenpeel buys the Big Four grocery from A. E. Neher and takes possession. Amos Clingenpeel to clerk. Neher ends Flora run after five years, planning to move to California where he will pursue business. Community notes praise his fairness and honesty and wish him prosperity.
Bertha Land seeks an absolute divorce from Charles Land in Howard circuit court alleging unduly familiar conduct with Miss Eula Burns of Burlington. The pair married December 17 1903. the husband known as the professional bridegroom repeatedly left, drank, and returned after abusing his wife.
The Burlington mail route star J A Ashba ends after years of service from Kokomo to Burlington. His contract pays $800 yearly. Burlington gains improved service with two daily runs from Cutler on the Vandalia and a daily Sedalia run. Night mail from Kokomo reaches Burlington by Sedalia before noon, while afternoon mail travels via Cutler and arrives the same evening.
Go With Circus star Ottie A Harmon of Cutler signs with Prof Ed Reno for this season joining John Robinson's former troupe. Glen Hamilton formerly of Plaza will serve as bandmaster for the Reno circus opening in Kankakee Illinois on April 30th. State auditor David E Sherrick notifies county treasurers that grace periods for tax payments must stop. letters go to other county treasurers across the state.
Ethel Pitman of Logansport visited Mantle Harmon after a few days last week. Bessie Hinkle and brother Carl also visited relatives in Logansport. Bertha Draper traveled to Walcott for a visit. Mrs. William Wilson and daughter Edith went to Moran to tend her sick father. Jessie Beck of Burlington visited Bessie Bishop. Roy Plank spent Sunday in Logansport. An Easter program is planned at Ball Hill church next Sunday. Mrs. Chas Harmon has been ill recently. A successful term of school closed last Thursday. Carrie Shaffer of Sedalia is doing house work for Mrs. Charles Kingery. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Sheets spent Sunday in Burrows. Millie Clo, working in Steve Long's restaurant, visited her mother Sunday. Mattie Bronson went to Flora on Tuesday. Clyde Bonebroke spent Tuesday in Delphi. Blanch Downey went to Wolcott for a visit. Mrs. Mary Draper went to Flora. Bessie Shanklin is attending school at Crawfordsville. Mrs. Nettie Shepard and children visit her sick mother at Moran. William Smith spent Tuesday.
Early fruit crops show damage from recent frosts but not total loss. Cherries hit hardest while late fruits suffer less. A sample of ten buds per tree shows apples mostly intact, peaches and plums damaged, pears untouched, while small fruits seem uninjured barring further cold.
Bert Cohee closed a deal Friday to own the H C Clark elevator at Lebanon and the J W Witt elevator at Whitestown. The total price is undisclosed but rumored to be in the thousands. Cohee already owns elevators at Cutler Bringhurst and Hillsboro and plans to retain all properties and operate them jointly.
