Filer Rural high school boys beat Kimberly on their floor 26 to 14 and Burley 29 to 28 Friday night. Wildcats head to Buhl Friday hoping to continue the run while the girls won 18 to 6.
Henry Moore, 17, confined for auto theft, attempted escape from the county jail on the courthouse seventh floor. He reportedly fell 30 to 40 feet when a blanket rope broke during descent and was taken to county general hospital.
Leaders of the Twin Falls County Grade School Athletic association met to outline plans for the third annual contest at the Fair Grounds in Filer. Nine districts will send winners to the final meet, with awards including ribbons for first to third, a traveling cup for the top school, and a moving cup funded by Filer business leaders. Both boys and girls will compete in junior and senior classes, with events and organization similar to prior years.
Rural high school offers two awards to spur scholastic competition. A metallic scroll, engraved each semester with class year and class president name, will honor the top average. the first engraving will be the Junior class. The second is the Silver Loving Cup named The Filer Record Trophy to be given to the student deemed most beneficial to the school this term.
In February 16, a warning is issued for delinquent auto license payments. The sheriff’s office will arrest or prosecute offenders for the current year. County officials have begun actions against motor vehicle owners overdue on this obligation, with several receiving notices from the state bureau of law enforcement.
A formal proclamation announces the death of Woodrow Wilson at his Washington home. It lauds his presidency, World War I leadership, and humanitarian ideals, directing half mast flags and funeral honors by order of the War and Navy secretaries. The document is signed by President Calvin Coolidge with Secretary of State Charles Evans Hughes.
Groundhog’s shadow and tradition point to six more weeks of winter as unsurfaced roads remain nearly impassable and cars get stuck in the mud. Yesterday’s rain and morning snow melted quickly, while Saturday’s sunshine let the groundhog retreat to winter quarters awaiting spring in mid March.
Miss Charlotte Jadson became the wife of Otha Nichol at the Methodint parsonage on February 1. Both from Hazelton, they plan their future home there. They were witnessed by Mr. and Mrs Grover C. Williams. The groom is a former Filer resident, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Nichol.
A sale of registered Holstein cattle will be held February 16 at Utah Agricultural College during farmers' institute week. Consignments come from breeders and the sale will be auctioned by Col. EO Waller of this place.
The Filer highway district board meets Saturday for its regular monthly session while the village board convenes Tuesday evening and Independent School district No 4 trustees meet Monday evening. County assessor B Cland Stewart and deputy George Davison interview Filer businessmen as the countywide tax assessment starts. Postmaster W P Shinn’s term ends but no replacement named yet. he will serve until a successor is appointed. W A Shear is the sole candidate who took the Twin Falls civil service exam. Local band organization progresses with twenty volunteers already enrolled and a meeting set for Monday at 7 40 PM at the F C Graves office to recruit horn players and gather additional musicians. The meeting is open to all interested.
Radio fans gain access to nationwide talent via telephone broadcast as F.K.B. Drake and George Potter introduce a system transmitting radio programs through home telephone receivers. A KGO Oakland mass program, with Julian H. Barnes and others, was relayed to Twin Pal and Bubs users, proving the method’s potential to extend live concerts and talks.
The district convention of the Odd Fellows lodge will be held here next. A large delegation attended the convention list week in Twin Falls. At the weekly meeting of Lodge No 12v, John W. Shipp of Idaho Falls, grand master of the end lodge of Idaho, was present as an official guest. Three deputy district grand masters were also present: George Oth of Mutt, Harry Alexander of Twin Falls, and B L Royston of Filer.
Prices offered by five firms for contract beans in the region are just over six cents higher per pound than last season. Local firms signing contracts include Filer Seed, Keeney & Son, Everett B. Clark Seed, Landreth Seed, and Rogers Bros. Seed. Strong demand and larger acreage optimism drive growers to secure contracts, with expectations of a larger crop than last year.
A December report from Filers grade schools catalogs excuses for tardiness and absence. It lists 249 accepted excuses and details motives such as helping at home, weather, car trouble, and late clocks, noting nearly half could be reduced by better effort from pupils and parents.
The beet growers from Utah and Idaho districts along with farm bureaus demand a split of 50-60 on the sugar price and content, plus a guaranteed minimum per ton. This early settlement signals market improvement. Andrews of Caldwell visited T. E. B. Moore's home to see her daughter Mrs. Georgia Bayder, local high school instructor.
