High School Activity Highlights And Basketball News

Report cards for the second six weeks show notable improvement, especially among freshmen with girls scoring higher than boys. Marjorie Newberry of Cedar Draw leads with the top six weeks grade of 5.75, a school record. Marvin Cole named boys basketball captain as inter-class tournaments unfold with juniors beating seniors and sophomores defeating yearlings. Jerome High School plans to send teams to meet local squads on December 15 amid keen competition and ongoing tryouts. Eva Moseley elected vice president of the freshman class.

Noon time hot lunches served in Filer school

Pupils are supplied with a noon time warm lunch in the school cafeteria under Mrs N D Read and the Filer P T A. Mrs Stephans is preparing the meals, one hot dish is served for those wanting it, priced 16 cents. Donations of supplies and cash are solicited.

Murtaugh Man Found Guilty of Murder

Murtaugh district farmer Murta Dunlap was found guilty by a district court jury of second degree murder in the death of his brother-in-law C A Russell at the Dunlap farm Sunday morning April 30. The verdict followed about three hours of deliberation. Sentencing set for Saturday by Judge WA Hathcock. Dunlap admitted firing the shot but said Russell reached for an axe as the dispute over cattle escalated. Russell rode away toward his home about a mile distant.

Auxiliary and Service Men's Frolic Tonight

The Filer Legion post and the Legion Auxiliary hold a joint social at Odd Fellows hall this evening at o'clock. Mothers wives sisters and daughters of Legion men are invited. Thanksgiving Day Observed Quietly in Filer Community

Thanksgiving day passed quietly in Filer with many attending the interscholastic football game in Twin Falls where Twin Falls defeated Filer 14 to 3. Local dinner gatherings dominated the day as about 50 guests joined a Rural High School building meal hosted by the Washington Rural club, while numerous families hosted relatives and friends at homes nearby across town.

Anscencement is made this week by G. Davis, Jeweler, who has been in business here for three years and will close his store Saturday night. He will join a wholesale firm and move toward Jerome. Annual Christmas Tree Party Planned by Filer Women

The Filer Women’s Club looks forward to hosting its annual Christmas tree party for local children. The event, eagerly anticipated by members, will occur Wednesday afternoon of next week at the community hall. The club emphasizes a generous reception for families and the children of the community. Dell Teghem and J. H. Mars, owners of the Niagara Springs ranch, have been noted for their recent activities near the Snake River Canyon north of Filer.

The Parent-Teacher Association holds its second regular monthly meeting with Superintendent Peek stating much of interest. R H Stevenson Dies Sudden Newspaper Leader in Idaho

Twin Falls Idaho R H Stevenson longtime newspaperman and former state senator died at 63 from complications after an operation stricken Sunday night and failing to rally Monday. native of Kentucky he worked for Cincinnati Enquirer before Idaho moves in 1968 publishing the Cooding Eagle and editing the Prem Times at Wallace. He established the Chronicle in 1919 and later campaigned for Judge William M Morgan and served in Democratic politics. He was a member of church and the Knights of Pythias.

Edward J Price Called by Death

Funeral services for Edward J Price aged 68 were held at his home with his son William M Price in attendance. Born in Wales, he lived in the south side before moving to Filer area. Survived by his wife and several children, the service was conducted by the Christian Service church with burial in the local cemetery.

School Children to Present Christmas Operetta Dec 21

Swarthmore Pa The annual election of American Rhodes scholars to Oxford was announced. Philip A Buck of the University of Idaho is named a Rhodes scholar from Idaho for 32 appointments nationwide. Buck, a Monrovia Cal native, has a detailed background in Idaho and Montana education and early life, and plans to sail for England to study as an Oxford graduate.
