Captain John J. Alles of Celestine dies at home Tuesday after a long illness due to old age. Born in Prussia on April 28, 1824, he served as captain of Co. I, 49th Indiana Volunteers in the Civil War, and later held posts as Hall township trustee and Dubois County commissioner. His son Fred Alles followed as commissioner.
