A letter recounts a Ferdinand Indiana to St Louis Springfield and Oklahoma land trip by 19 travelers. The group details rail journey misadventures, cattle interests near Amarillo and Groom, land schemes, Catholic colony plans, and town notices about church work and local commerce.
Mariah Hill residents visited relatives on Sunday as Heidelbech of Evansville spent time with friends. Emil Sanders from Evansville stopped for a pleasant call. Nattie Hollander returned from Louisville for a few weeks with her parents. Dr A J Maslowsky arrived from Louisville to spend a week with family. Charles Menkhaus of Huntingburg was in town on business. Dick Windpfennig of Tell City phoned and met local merchants. Our township will extend the school term by half a month this year. Anton Gasser and Will Bosler remain ill.
Herman Bolte severed his hand while sawing a heading at Bolte's heading factory last Saturday morning. Two deep cuts about two and a half inches required several stitches to close.
Citizens of Rockport push subscriptions to stock in a new tobacco warehouse company with $7000 capital. Promoters guarantee 10 percent to stockholders and plan a warehouse capable of handling 2,000,000 pounds of tobacco, backed by Rockport businessmen and TP B Hardy and Co as the driving force.
County Superintendent Strasell inspected Me Jeft and Haifmann schools and commented that the sanitation tax paid was the cheapest in the county. D. Cutford of Wabash and Valentine Pleig moved to their Perry County farm after completing work. Fleig’s five year business run is expected to continue with success.
Sheriff Ferdinand Vollmer has cleaned and repaired the jail and the sheriff's residence at his own cost. He directed men to scrape cells, remove large amounts of dust from the roof, paint ironwork, shrub shrubbery, and papered nails in the window sashes, improving the facility.
A Jasper Herald report describes improvements at a jail where leaks and water stains were visible. Sheriff Vollmer has added paint and aluminum to cover ironwork and plans to repaint woodwork and sashes, making the jail neater and reducing odor in the closet. The note dates to early March 1907.
Mrs Magdalena Huelsmann died Tuesday at her son's home from asthma at age 78. The funeral was held Thursday morning at St Ferdinand's Cemetery with family and friends expressing sympathy.
Mrs Lena Seger died Tuesday morning after heart trouble. Nearly 68, she left six children: Mrs Leo Snyder, Mrs C V Spayd, William, Henry, Leo and Miss Francis Mehling. Interment was Thursday at St Ferdinand Cemetery. The News extends sympathy to the bereaved.
Mr and Mrs Harry Reckerhoff hosted last Wednesday a birthday party for Joseph Oser turning 71. Guests included Mr and Mrs John Klueh Mr and Mrs Joseph Reckelhoff Mr and Mrs Henry Remke Mr and Mrs Leo Wirtzberger Miss Rose Oser and others with Frank Schlachter Ed Wirtzberger Joseph Remke Xavier Schreiner and Robert Rewke. Refreshments and a fine lunch were served and guests departed late, satisfied with the evening.
