Ben A. Kavat applies to the Dubois County board of commissioners at the December 1908 meeting for leave to sell spirituous vinous and malt liquors in quantities under a quart for one year at a room 22 by 24 feet in a two story frame building on the southeast corner of lot No 66 Ohio Street. An agricultural school at Gemmboux offers a five part apiculture course with about 200 lessons covering theory practical beekeeping product uses and hive making. The Kabyles keep two bee species including a small irascible honey bee called the wasp bee. They rely on the African aulla clover Hedysarum flexuosum for honey and maintain bees in five foot long cylindrical hives from which combs are periodically removed. The two species produce distinctly different honey.
Australian beekeepers struggle to find markets for honey as England rejects the taste while the home market may grow. Baking factories here use ordinary honey, and honey bread could gain traction. Fancy honey fetches 4 to 5 percent in Melbourne and Sydney.
The article argues for sticking with the "good olde English bee" while noting limited gains from breeding. It compares English horses, cattle, sheep, wine, dogs, and poultry to continental stocks, highlighting Arabian, European, and Spanish or Greek influences. It ends with a speculative note on American bees.

Those in alkali grass areas can build a sod poultry house cheaper and sturdier than a frame structure. Thick 2 to 3 foot walls with a good roof last 12 to 15 years, then longer with more years before use declines. A 14 by 20 foot example uses four windows, plastered walls, a dirt floor with gravel, and 2x4 roost anchors set flush to the inner wall.
The Farm Stock Journal notes a profitable mix of fruit and poultry on small farms near markets. Hens need liberal range with shade and varied greens, insects, and can thrive under poultry netting. Mulched bushes help insect control, soft soil aids scratching, and early plowing keeps ground in shape to yield both fruit and fowl benefits.
Field and Farm notes fattening ducks is easy if in good health. A mix of cornmeal three parts, bran one, scraps one, with milk when available, can fatten a healthy young duck in one week. Some use equal ground oats for half the cornmeal. Kill and pick when the first full feather coat matures, usually end of week eight, yielding a fat heavy duck. The article adds about Denver Chinamen seeking ducks for their diet and paying good prices.
The article argues all poultry raisers should keep one breed. It claims pure bred fowls yield better results and higher profits than mixed flocks. It suggests testing by raising forty crossbred and forty pure bred birds under identical care to compare egg production and profitability.
Ordinary food lacks enough oil for 150 eggs per hen yearly. Chickens require ample air, pure water, and green feed. Provide grit and attentive care, as children are the farm’s most important crop.
