The Ferdin and Giants beat the Holland team last Sunday afternoon as Ed Wahl of Dale pitched a fine game. Cornelius Altmann hit a home run, with the score 2 to 1 in the ninth inning in favor of the Giants.
With one man on base and two down, Nalie hit a fielders' nightmare over the heads for a home run and drove in the runner from second to clinch the game. He added two singles while Wahl fanned 15 and Jones 12 as the Giants beat Holland 3 to 2. Umpires were John Schnieders and Dan Niehaus.
The body of Lieutenant William L. Vogel, first Du Bois County deceased to arrive overseas, came to Indianapolis from France where he served with the 84th Division and the 869th Infantry. He died after influenza at Brest while awaiting transport home.
Indianapolis 1920 notice urges all Democratic voters to register for the October 4 precinct deadline. Registration hours run 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on September 4 and October 4, with four methods and three application types for Native and Foreign born voters and absent voters. It stresses that unregistered voters cannot vote in November and advises precinct chairmen to maximize turnout.
The Democratic meeting convened in the Jasper court room at two with county chairman John Mehne presiding. Speakers included Uncle Mike Sweeney and Hon. Jonas Howard, with Mrs. Arch Doane and Mrs. Sarah Holliday leading women’s efforts. More than 100 workers attended, many women, and district chairman Howard called it the best yet in the 3rd district.
Peter J. Lux, Shelby County corn champion, selected by the Indiana Federation of Farmers Association to direct a countywide membership drive in Dubois County from August 1 to 31. He will be aided by H. C. Thompson, the county agent, and is expected to help Dubois join the state federation as a key unit in Indiana.
The July list thanks new NEWS subscribers including Raymond Worten Ferdinand Oscar Snyder and others from Indiana and Kentucky. A notice from a moving proprietor welcomes customers to new quarters and expresses appreciation for patronage. Herbert W Eversman and wife of Louisville announce the birth of a baby boy Leonard Herbert with sponsors John G Eversman and Mrs Joe Meyer.
Father Odillo, appointed by the Abbott to fill the vacancy caused by Father John’s death, celebrated his first mass at St Ferdinand church. A brass band and hundreds of parishioners greeted him at a welcoming event led by Prof. H. F. Brackmann, who promised continued support and a fitting home for the new priest. Odillo, surprised yet moved, pledged to serve to the best of his ability.
Dublin County tractor agencies met at County Agent H. C. Thompson's office to set rules for a tractor plowing event on August 12. A 40 acre field on Charles Burgers farm 14 miles southwest of Jasper near the Jasper Huntingburg road will host the demonstration with ten tractor makes expected and shade for visitors.
W A Wollenman and K C Schnellenberger announce The Modern opening on Saturday August 7 1920 offering jewelry optical goods drugs and sundries with a Clarion demonstration. Schnellenberger's Department store will run a Clean Sweep sale from August 9 to August 21 to clear stock and make room for new items. Karl Schnellenberger advertises a large stock and big reductions to attract shoppers.
