In Little Rock on March 8 the Arkansas Senate approved the university appropriation after rejecting a full cut to the Agricultural School staff's $80,000. Amendments trimmed soil survey funds to $6,000 and kept a $12,000 horticulture item despite opposition. The measure passed after a substitute report to the full committee and a vote to proceed.
In New York City a morning blaze in the fashionable Burlington hotel forced about a hundred guests to flee in flimsy night garments. Firemen and police carried women down fire escapes and ladders as guests were saved. Sixty five year old Henry Smith, a longtime hotel employee, ran the elevator through smoke to help evacuate others. the fire was confined to the first floor.

Floyd Allen and son Claude S. Allen will be put to death in the state penitentiary on March 28 for their role in the Hillville courthouse murder of March 14, 1912. Governor Mann refused to commute the sentences to life imprisonment. The pair had been slated to die previously.
