W. J. Bryan warns Democratic Congressmen they face a fight over committee assignments. He urges that manhood be the basis for fitness and that the party, to earn a long lease of power, must regard the rights of the people as paramount.
Detroit reports a new Sherman Law application filed by the government against Kellogg Tested Car Make Co led by William Kellogg W C Kellogg and Andrew Ross. The action challenges a practice to copyright packages and force retailers to sell at fixed prices or face infringement liability. A camera left at Grabill's Studio is to be claimed by its owner.
A. W. Pratt sold the Fayetteville electric plant to John R. Felker of Rogers Ark for 155000 dollars with 75000 paid cash and the remainder due May 1, 1913. J. W. McClendon remains in charge until then and may move to Kansas City. Felker is linked to a syndicate buying power plants in Missouri and Arkansas.
In Hudson New York on December 36 suffragists started a five mile leg of a thirty mile trek to Albany. The plan is to cover the rest in stages with Mrs General Rosaline Jones signaling a future walk to Washington.
Advices say General Blanco with 500 federals defeated Salazar's rebels at Janos. Twelve rebels were killed and many wounded. No report yet on Federal casualties.
New York December 26 ex press companies will not try to meet the government in carrying parcels post starting January 1. Officials say little for publication but privately predict the law will prove unsatisfactory and likely to fail. They anticipate postal receipts will show a deficiency and the next Postmaster General may not be enthusiastic.
New York December 26 reports Loeb has resigned as Port of New York collector. It is believed that William Edwards, the street commissioner and Wilson ally, will be appointed in his place after confirming the resignation. Edwards aided Wilson’s campaign and has strong proximity to the administration.
In Taylorville Illinois on December 6 John Belder, angered by his step-daughter Elsie Fisher marrying Ora Redfern, opened fire at a wedding party wounding Emma Fisher 68 his mother-in-law. He resisted officers and was shot. The woman is reported likely to die.
The interstate commerce commission today suspended the proposed car load lumber rate increases from Tennessee and Mississippi to readers north of the Ohio River to Canada. The move delays the higher charges until June 13.
London dispatch reports Sir Frederick Ponsonby stating the King had a slight chill yesterday but was well again today, denying rumors of serious illness.
Christian Volunteer Church distributed eight fruit baskets to the sick unable to visit and served meals to fifty four at Christmas Day. A religious service followed dinner from eight to six, yielding six conversions and two reclaimed souls. Guy de Villepion, ex teacher and war correspondent, arrives in San Francisco and recounts a perilous trek from the coast of South America toward Buenos Aires. He claims cannibals fattened him for a feast but he escaped and reached Callao. He recalls odd strangers and a horn seller anecdote.
In Indianapolis on December 26 the U S Attorney is expected to finish his argument in the dynamite conspiracy case by six o clock. Afterward the judge will instruct the jury which must decide on forty indicted men. Deliberations will be long and outcomes uncertain.
