Phillip Bailder, a Texas farmer near Elanders, accidentally killed his five year old son when the boy crawled between his legs and touched the trigger. The shot tore away his hand and jaw. the child died several hours later.

Baron Charles Harding viceroy of India was wounded in the shoulder when a bomb struck the Howdah Regal elephant as he and Lady Harding entered Delhi. One attendant was killed and another wounded. the assassin fled. Lady Harding unharmed, procession continued to the vice regal lodge. Medicals call wound a flesh wound with tetanus risk. Wholesale arrests of natives reported. A separate London cable notes the viceroy’s condition not dangerous and cites possible motive over capital move. A reward of 4500 dollars offered for the assassin.
In Buffalo on December 23 J Frank Hickey, accused of killing Josephs and other youths, was sentenced to not less than twenty years nor more than his natural life in the penitentiary. Justice Brown spared him the electric chair citing alleged mental imbalance and ordered transfer to Auburn Prison.
A Hakodate message reports that a massive explosion yesterday claimed about 200 miners. Thirteen miners escaped the disaster leaving a charred scene and a write up about the incident.
Litle Rock December 23 The governor denounces the penitentiary lease system calling it a burning seething hell and says he grants clemency to those entitled to it His goal is to reform the system despite criticism asserting he acts with facts unknown to the public and invites scrutiny of each case
Indianapolis December report states attorneys Daniel Howell, Clifford Landsdale of Kansas City, Pield Cleveland, and W N Harding split six hours in defense arguments. Senator Kern to close for defense this afternoon, followed by District Attorney Miller who will give fifteen hours for the government.
In Trenton New Jersey on December 25 Governor Wilson spent the day as a member of the Court of Pardon considering seventy cases. Georges Chemet flew a hydroaeroplane from Venice to Trieste and back, with Italian Major Gianocehlo aboard. The 169 mile round trip included a motor failure near shore on the return leg, repaired at sea, then a final approach to Venice at 75 mph amid enthusiastic greetings.
