Fire in Cincinnati gutting the Union Trust Building seven stories high caused about 800000 in damage. Police and firemen saved many people including forty scrubwomen and janitors from peril in the Union Trust Building, with no believed loss of life.
Fort Smith reports two Oklahoma towns, Jay and New Jay, in turmoil over the county seat. A mob reportedly seized the New Jay courthouse while a later Jay message urged urgent intervention as wire communications were cut. The contested county seat location and recent election are the focus of the unrest.
The National Progressive Conference adjourned after adopting resolutions to organize the party into a large dues paying body. Miss Jane Adams urged efforts to wipe out wartime sectional lines and to expand speaking campaigns and bureaus nationwide. An Eastern delegates train was set to depart at 5:30 this afternoon.
Tonight at 7 30 the Central Methodist Church hosts a pastor led service with singing and fellowship detailing a vital message for attendees. New York December 11 Justice Goff sentenced former city chamberlain Charles Hyde to two to three and a half years in Sing Sing for extorting a bribe from a northern bank to benefit the bankrupt Carnegie Trust Co. He was released on bail pending argument on the legality of his conviction.
Walter Frew of New York testifies that country bank checks cost New York banks two to three million dollars annually. He estimates daily losses of interest totaling about fifteen hundred dollars. The hearing occurs in Washington as part of the Untermeyer case.
Ww a Jernigan succeeds T M Jeffords as head of the Boys Corn Club in Little Rock. He is a former Independence county native and University of Arkansas graduate. The program notes six boys yielding over 100 bushels per acre and lists several with over 120 to 148 bushels. Proposals aim to send 100 bushel club members to the National Corn Exposition in Columbia S C and possibly to meet the President.
New York officials report Gen Daniel Sickles removed as chairman after a $7000 shortfall in State Monument Commission funds. Sickles pledges to cover the gap and faces possible civil action against commissioners over alleged negligence. He says private and public funds were mixed, no fraud. Meanwhile Episcopal Church women announce their Christmas bazaar for December 14 at Nesbit and McMillan.
Public sale of 35 acres in Washington County Arkansas follows a chancery order. The sale on January 3 1913 requires a three month credit with a 10 percent interest bond and a lien on the property. Also Christmas vacation for University and Public Schools from December 20 to early January with notes on school attendance and teachers meetings. Pension for mouldings and local ads follow. Cow listings and wood and coal delivery offer in local notices.
London December 11. Misa Elsie Howe the only suffragette caught in the false alarm plan was sentenced to two months in prison. Police fear what the suffragettes will do next while the public reads local notes on trains automobiles and a furniture ad section including relics of the era.
President Taft announced an inspection voyage to Panama aboard the battleship Arkansas. He will depart Washington on Thursday for a two week trip, returning on the last day of the year. the Arkansas is expected to reach Panama on the afternoon of December 24.
Washington December 11 Chairman Underwood of the Ways and Means Committee outlined hearings for tariff revision laws. Two sessions daily will run January 6 through 31 on various schedules. Also note advertising copy about artistic Christmas cards and letters at J F Moores.
In Indianapolis December 11 perjury charges loom from contradictions between government and defense witnesses in the dynamite case. Market Attorney Miller hinted that some parties lie. William H. Quigley Detroit union carpenter and defense witness was jailed on perjury accusations and held for bond.
