Paris reports that French and British lines hold against a massive German assault. Allied forces defend key sectors from Audenarde to Namur, with heavy losses foretold. Meanwhile American notes describe a deadly campaign and domestic farming efforts address botrytis rot with cooperative action in Arkansas.
General Rennenkamp claims most of eastern Prussia is under Russian control as reports say Gumie Insterburg Ortelburg and Joh anburg are captured and three German corps are defeated with thousands taken prisoner The Russian drive into Austria continues while a Cleveland clubwoman proposes an ordinance to separate escorted women from unescorted patrons in movie houses.
The University of Arkansas announces Bernard Brown as Instructor in Physics. Brown, a Peabody College graduate, studied at the University of Texas and the University of Chicago, and taught in Texas high schools and colleges.
The Sunday union services in the Chautauqua Tent drew full seating with many attendees outside. John E. Thomas led a short song service before Rev. M Waldrip joins Rev. L D Riddell in delivering the main sermon. The revival runs every evening for one month with non sectarian aims and musical leadership by Mr and Mrs John E Thomas.

Swiss refugees total about 40,000 in area, with 20,000 still in Britain. Austrian campai gns appear to waver along the Drina after 4,500 Austrian prisoners and 175 cannon captured.
London reports British expedition has been in action near Monz Belgium since Sunday aiding French to check German advance. War Office says results will take days to show. If Germans retreat they risk Belgian forces at Antwerp and Namur forts.
Aug 24 Zurich swirls with Americans and English as H Carl Wilson and Goodwin Refuraneisco report to friends in London that they are in Switzerland. They say money is scarce and they face travel constraints as they attempt to reach Zurich.
W P McNair, Frisco agent, says a readjustment of freight terminals is under consideration with Chester favored after Fayette Junction was dropped from calculations. Engineers had surveyed Fayette Junction but Chester now appears the likely location for a new terminal on the Frisco line.
One German embassy wireless from Sayville reports the Crown Prince’s forces defeat five French army corps near Metz. The southern wing retreated, the route was cut off, and many prisoners were taken.
