Washington August 22 notification to Cherokee Indians that they will not negotiate disposal of lands until the Interior Department first scrutinizes and approves the conveyance. The move aims to guard against future illicit traffic, not to expose or punish individuals or companies accused of fraud.
News arrives that the contract for the St Louis and North Arkansas Railroad from Marshall in Searcy County to Quitman in Cleburne County has been let. Quitman lies 30 miles north of Conway and the line may extend to Hot Springs via Little Rock. Railroad officials recently visited Quitman Leslie and Marshall but offered no definite details. Conway residents eagerly anticipate the line's arrival.
London Aug 22 Lord Salisbury England's ex prime minister died at 9:05 PM after 48 hours of decline. He sustained by oxygen as his daughter Lady Gwendoline Cecil knelt nearby during his final moments. He served as prime minister from 1889 to 1902 and held top posts including Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and First Lord of the Treasury. He was noted as very rich.
