Washington reports a cablegram from Ambassador Beaupre in Bogota stating the Colombian senate has rejected the Panama canal treaty. The note is dated August 12 and received by the state department on August 17.
In St Louis on August 17 Judge Rogers in the US district court sustained the Western Union demurrer in the Tabor injunction suit. The opinion states the company may dismiss employees for union membership or any lawful reason and may maintain a blacklist. District Superintendent Frankel notes reductions led to terminations, with most workers rehired by brokers or railroads. one case unlocated.
Dr. H. D. Guidry, Louisiana Republican leader in Lafayette Parish, denounces Roosevelt and urges Republicans to back the Democratic ticket. He condemns perceived pro Negro policies, warns of lynchings and social equality, and says Southern Republicans must disaffiliate regardless of economic views.
