Fort Dodge Independent Telephone Co buys the Bell line branch stock and will consolidate. A long term toll-line contract is signed. Fort Dodge remains locally held. exchanges merge in five months. Manager M. Plaister continues. No rate changes. The system adds 3,000 telephones. Bell ring has operated here twenty years.
Five year old son of Melvin Simons of Marcus Iowa was killed outright when his father’s automobile turned turtle on a steep grade five miles north of Marcus. Miss Lillian Miller was seriously hurt, while Mr. and Mrs. Simons and their daughter Carrie escaped injury.
Des Moines May 3 council members passed a resolution to request the street railway company to indicate if it desires to continue negotiations on the franchise dispute. If the company does not answer favorably by May 15 the council will withdraw the proposed ordinance recently submitted.
George H. Richmond, chief of police in Council Bluffs, was removed from office by decree of Judge EK M. Woodruff of the district court. The ruling followed a trial that ended Friday after deliberation.
Waukee Ig May 3 A retired farmer named Frank Johnson was found dead by his wife at daybreak in a woodshed, hanging from a rafter. The body was stiff and cold.
New York grand jury report confirms existence of white slave conditions and reveals four enslaved girls, two underage, purchased by women agents. Three arrests made. Harry Levinson and Belle Moore named principals. Aleck Anderson also detained. Bail set at 10000 dollars. DA Whitman notes agents targeted very young girls and that several rescuers are college graduates.
New York police and federal agents arrested Frank Mater of Morrison and Mater at 44 Broad Street and Joseph Becker in Jersey City at an office tied to T. Mardlan in the Lincoln Trust building. Officials say the raids shut off bucket shop quotations from the New York Stock Exchange.
