A Cedar Hill report describes a wagon accident in the Animas river near the ford. Mrs Leonard Boat and her baby drowned after the wagon was swept away while a boy and others survived. Funeral services were held Tuesday.
A visitor notes Farmington with 30 plus merchants and large stocks, estimating the town’s population between 850 and 1,500. Rents are affordable, water and electric service are solid, and growth hinges on rail expansion and sale of large land tracts. Beautiful homes and shaded river lanes mark twenty years of steady prosperity.
Durango Herald reports B. B. Custer leaves his post as Indian agent to Albuquerque where he will supervise about 4000 Pueblo Indians and 62 staff. His successor, William D. Leonard, arrives by Saturday. Custer says he fired many Mexican hangers-on to curb corruption and improve native farming. Pittsburg and Allegheny City consolidation decree signed, Pittsburgh to appeal.
Prunings and root removals mark orchard and vineyard work as residents assess nursery stock and pest challenges. The fruit crop looks promising after good early growth, though hay and other crops lag. Grasshoppers from the San Juan river prompt humane extermination attempts using fungus and oil traps. Despite pests, the town remains orderly with strong church attendance and four worship centers led by local pastors. FRANK HARTMAN.
An advertisement notes Maxim's gunmaker claims fall short of its power, then parallels this to Chamberlain’s Colic Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy. It asserts the remedy will positively cure diarrhoea dysentery and stomach pains and has never failed, with sales through all dealers.
A new Taos bank linked to Santa Fe opens this week. The New Mexico Supreme Court held sessions with cases argued and submitted. Governors and officials met to apportion 66 constitutional convention delegates. Assessors rules on license commissions, and seven new companies filed for secretary of state filings including Bluewater Development Albuquerque Atlas Realty Oasis Oil Roswell Tongue Pressed Brick Raton Hagerman Cement Stone Co.
