McConnell Bound Over After Durango Bank Arrest

Chas. F. McConnell president of Smelter City State Bank of Durango was arrested about 5 p.m. on a charge of receiving deposits while knowing the bank was failing. He posted 3000 bail and was released. Receiver O. F. Broyles reports likely payout to depositors will be under ten percent.

San Juan County Tax Assessments Rise Amid Growth

A net increase of 872,961.13 in San Juan County assessed valuations over 1906 is reported with total taxable amount up to 983,351.13 after exemptions. The record shows agricultural lands and city lots driving gains while cattle, sheep, and other items fluctuate. New Mexico Statehood League Plans Washington Push

The New Mexico Statehood League says Governor Curry and other leaders will travel to Washington in January to assess statehood options. A large non partisan delegation will be formed to support statehood and irrigation advocacy, with all Natives invited to join. If the statehood bill fails, eastern states will learn New Mexico’s case at the National Irrigation Congress in Albuquerque next October.

Judge Ira A. Abbott ruled in favor of Arizona & Colorado to restrain the Denver & Rio Grande from taking possession of seven right of way tracts in San Juan county pending completion of twenty miles of railroad by the plaintiff along the line in dispute. The matter traces back to earlier rulings and venue changes with extensive testimony. the defendants plan to appeal.
