Sugar Pines Show Off World’s Largest Cones in Sierra Nevada
The sugar pine in the Sierra Nevada bears the world’s largest cones 16 to 86 inches long with three to three and a half inch diameters when green. Cones ripen in autumn of the second season after blossoming and scale up to double their diameter as seeds fall. Sugar pines reach 200 to 220 feet tall, with some ancient trunks ten to twelve feet wide, while giant sequoias boast much smaller cones of two and a half inches. Discovered by David Douglas in 1826 in southern Oregon, the species grows where sequoias thrive, rivaling other conifers in size and prominence.
