Rural Carriers Report Figures From April

Rural mail carriers across the United States recorded daily deliveries by class in April. The Elgin routes show Route 1 delivering 605 pounds 3 ounces with 33 pounds 6 ounces collected, Route 2 delivering 616 pounds 10 ounces with 42 pounds 10 ounces collected, Route 3 delivering 874 pounds and 1 ounce with ongoing collection totals.

Change In Service For Frisco Mail Schedule

A new mail service took effect last Sunday with the Frisco timetable. No 10 bound for Elgin at 8 58 a m carries mail to the east daily including Sunday. No 112 due here at 4 00 p m has no mail clerk but will carry locked pouches at Elgin Chickasha and Oklahoma City, though Sunday service is omitted on pouches. Westbound trains retain mail clerks on No 9 at 12 35 p m and the night train at 9 11 p m with two locked pouches from Oklahoma City and Chickasha. No mail on Sundays.

Frisco Time Table Changes Announced for Elgin Line

Frisco schedule updates list Elgin bound No 10 at 9 00 a m No 112 at 4 00 p m west bound No 12 86 p m and No 407 at 9 17 p m A traveler to Lawton can depart 12 35 p m and return by 4 00 p m gaining two hours ten minutes The new timetable is described as an improved mail and passenger service choice for the line.

Mrs Ella May Groves Dies at 26 After Illness in Drumright Okla

Mrs Ella May Groves of Drumright Oklahoma died early Sunday after a few hours of dangerous illness from blood poisoning at age 26 years 12 days. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the home of her father W G Hunt in Elgin with Rev D L Hincklay officiating. She leaves husband Alva Groves and two sons Olen and Glen, aged 7 and 9, plus parents and several siblings. The family attended the service in Shawnee where she had united with the Methodist church South at age 13 and married in 1904 at Lawton. She was buried in Elgin cemetery after prayers and final rites.

Lightning Strike Dashes Through Elgin Home

A severe storm struck Elgin around 9 PM Saturday with rain hail and lightning. Mrs Addie Cremer’s residence suffered damage as a stove pipe broke and soot coated the house while shingles ripped from the roof. The family sheltered in a cave at the time, and witnesses say lightning entered the cave door.

Weather Outlook for West Gulf States May 5

The Weather Bureau in Washington issues a forecast for the West Gulf States including Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Showery weather is expected early in the week, followed by generally fair conditions for four to five days. Temperatures will be seasonable.

Elgin Students to Compete at Lawton Events

Elgin represents will compete next Friday and Saturday in Lawton. Participants include Spelling-Mire Laer Wiggins and Wendell Wertengla Pisao Misa Hallie King in various events. Games, singing, reading, and track events feature athletes such as Ernest Kitsmiller, Scott Walling, James Hagle, Delbert Cline, Harold Putney, Elmer Kitsmiller, and Don Brunskill.

Rider and horse survive near Medicine Creek crossing

At about 4 p m last Wednesday Jess Ballou rode a young horse from Lawton toward his uncle’s home near the Stony Point chophouse. Crossing Medicine creek by the cement crossing at Ft Sill the horse jumped off balance into the current hed by upstream flow. The horse foundered but Ballou held the horse’s tail and both reached shore safely.

Sterling Star Class at Oisio Methodist Sunday School

On a Sunday morning 14 youth entered the Oisio Methodist church wearing ribbon badges reading Scaring Star Class. They joined the service and declined lunch, saying they had brought their own dinner and would eat at the iron bridge over the creek. One member noted the class had 42 members on the roll.

Benjamin C Palmer dies suddenly at Beaver Bond home

Benjamin C Palmer born March 12 1844 in New York state died suddenly at his Beaver Bond neighborhood home last Wednesday from acute indigestion. He leaves a wife and adopted daughter Ethel. Funeral held Thursday at two o'clock conducted by Rev D L Hinckley. Interment at Lotitin cemetery.

Break In At Depot Ends With Escape

At about 10 pm Friday J Fitzgerald, after retrieving game papers, encountered two would be burglars at the depot. A freight car blocked crossing as guards forced entry with a crow bar, prying open a window and breaking the sash lock. One intruder fled while the other remained outside before slipping away unseen.

Bids Sought for Hay at Fort Sill Farm

Sealed proposals in triplicate will be received and opened at Fort Sill at 10 a.m. on June 10. Bids cover 832000 pounds of feeding hay and 248000 pounds of cutting hay, to be baled and delivered to designated storehouses or sheds as directed by the quartermaster. Town Board Organizes and Sets Municipal Plans

The new town board organized with Ww Brunskiil as chairman and E Wert appointed street and retreat commissioner. The board vows to improve Elgin streets and trees, enforce duty of marshals, and enhance the town’s appearance and safety through immediate repairs.

On The Elgin Routes. a local resident remains in Elizabeth La. with a star. Mrs. Tom Sperling of route 2 has contracted smallpox. The Saonn Hilon school on route 1 hosted McAnaw for a program honoring the occasion, with the event held in the evening.
