A young crowd hosted a charivari at J E Byrd and wife in the city's neat part Monday night. They welcomed guests inside and presented tin ware as a shower. Candy and oranges were served, cigars passed, and the revelers departed wishing the couple a long, happy life.
In New Messenger, Will Vawter starts duties as mail messenger after Safe Hall resigns for better pay. Four messengers have held the route in nine months, including King James Eads and C. S. Walling. Observers say the position pays well enough to lure carriers to other jobs.
J. W. Cantwell, city superintendent of Fort Worth schools, has been elected president of the A. and M. College at Stillwater and has begun his duties.
On May 20 the postmaster general issued an order on rural carrier pay effective July 1 1915. Rates vary by route length with annual sums and monthly pay for six days a week. Routes over 24 miles 1200 dollars, 22 to 24 miles 1152, 2 to 22 miles 1150, and lower tiers decline accordingly. One route over 24 miles and one under 24 miles by a quarter mile are noted among routes Land 2 out of Elzin.
Cannon Wade reports a marriage license granted Saturday to Perry Cannon 23 and Ethel Wade 17 of Mt. Scott. The bride, daughter of G W Wade, is noted as a local poet who authored It Wonder What I Would Do and previously appeared in the Champion.
At the bride’s mother’s home near Eilgin the ceremony united Lieutenant Floyd O. Toddy of West Mansfield Ohio and Miss Rita M. Hoffer in marriage. The couple departed for a home in Manila after a Pacific voyage aboard a Frisco train to Oklahoma City then San Francisco. Toddy will serve in the Philippine Islands for about 12 years with a return to the United States anticipated later. out of town guests included Mrs L K Reynolds Miss Minnie Gottsbelg and Milas Ida B Good.
Tra Fisher and wife from Haven Kansas visited M. F. Richardson and others on route 1. Mrs J T McCraw of route 1 visited Snyder where her mother has been ill. A daughter of W A Nickell and her Missouri children stayed at the route 1 home. Bill Hunt of route 1 rode to Lawton on business. Professors Taylor and the Cobb Bros of Quartet Music Co Ft Worth visited last week. H. Williams on route 1, W D Petty and wife visiting E A Murray on route 1. A J I Case threshing machine arrived Monday for R C Baker on route 2.
Neighborhood News reports the Apache band revival with weekly street concepts. Meteher versus Apache ended tied 2 to 2 after the 12th inning as darkness halted play. Jed Johnson, leader of the Tri County Rural Carters Association, was tried for speeding and acquitted. Dr W M McIntosh to lead a tabernacle meeting at Smah Spring near Temple. A seven year old girl from Hollis Schools is the valedictorian.
The town board held a regular monthly meeting Monday evening with little business. The resignation of C. E. Price as town clerk was read and accepted, but the appointment of a successor was deferred. The board spent time reviewing the Elgin cemetery status and plans to improve it.
William Jennings Bryan resigns from the Wilson administration citing a note to Germany he cannot join. He says duty and the cause of preventing war compelled him to withdraw, while remaining publicly supportive of Wilson. The cabinet is to cable Berlin with Bryan's resignation. He retires to private life tomorrow but will continue political support for Wilson.
Dr L H Hilsmeyer has converted the southwest hotel room formerly used by J B Byrd in the cream business into an office. He installed new furniture to create a private, cozy space where timid customers can have their aches and pain exams without hotel patrons as onlookers.
A bridal shower for Miss Alta Hof er was held Thursday afternoon at the home of D E McAn an. Guests enjoyed a pleasant afternoon with gifts and well wishes for the bride to be.
The Star class of the Methodist Sunday school will hold an ice cream social tonight at the home of O. H. Putney to raise funds for the piano fund.
