A blast of fire damp trapped hundreds of miners this morning with 400 workers in the shaft when the explosion occurred. Rescue teams faced raging flames as they battled to reach the men, with those saved all reported injured.
A total of 35 bodies have been brought to the surface by 4 pm with 4 survivors severely injured. Officials state no hope for the 400 still trapped as mine galleries collapsed after the explosion. Salvage teams equipped with oxygen work to reach those below.
Nov 12 report from Ham Westphalia states a fire damp explosion trapped hundreds at the Badbod mine. About 400 men worked there. 27 bodies recovered, 150 still in shaft No 2, and 300 believed at risk. Rescue efforts faced extreme danger as flames hampered progress.
New Orleans, November 13. James D. Tolson, a motorman in Monroe, La., wrecked his street car to save a child on the tracks. He halted with a jerk and reversed current as the car rolled downhill, sending it off the rails and sliding twenty feet. Several passengers suffered bruises but none seriously injured.
Helena Mont November 12 Albert Berger a former Alaska miner killed himself at Canyon Ferry Tuesday night after throwing $2,000 in money orders payable to himself in a store. He declared the money was in the hands of the government and no one would worry over it after he was gone.
A southbound passenger train No. 11 on the Bossmer and Lake Erie railroad wrecked near Butler Pennsylvania last night traveling about forty miles per hour. More than 100 passengers escaped with slight injuries.
New York November 12 a violent break in Harriman Pacific railway stock prices sparked a feverish early market. Speculators unloaded large holdings amid rumors of dividend changes at today’s directors meeting. Overnight rumors were discredited and the belief grew that only regular dividends would be declared. Prices fell in the first half hour as activity surged.
Albany reports that four prominent figures are in contention to succeed Thomas Collier Platt whose term ends March 4. Platt is infirm and unlikely to seek re election, opening the field to strong candidates headed by Bihu, with more names hinted for consideration as the choice nears.
New Orleans authorities arrest Engineer W. A. Glickburn and Conductor A. B. Keys after a wreck at Little Woods station on the New Orleans and Northeastern railroad involving the Great Northern express. Investigation continues into the collision and delay in sending the relief train from New Orleans.
Bemidji Minn Nov 12 A Palmer agent for Minnesota International railway reports the Hackensack depot safe blown open. Cash and Northern Express Co funds totaling 103.74 were taken. In Newfoundland St Johns Nov 12 the tally shows Sir Robert Bond and Sir Edward Morris each with eighteen supporters in the legislature prompting potential new general elections.
New York speaker Dr Harvey W Wiley head of the government pure food bureau warns Sphinx club of advertisers that dishonest ads will be pursued. He asserts no advertising is honest when it makes misleading claims about goods. He notes the issue of adulterated foods and cites strict enforcement if offenses continue.
In Duluth on November 12 a funeral was held at the cathedral for Mrs Reinhart and her twin babies. Formerly Nellin McNulty of Duluth, she died last week at the Gault in Sault Ste Marie. The twins died soon after birth. Bodies were exhumed and brought to Duluth for burial, interment at Calvary Cemetery with all three placed in one open casket.
Treves, Prussia, Nov 12. The grand duke born 1852 is rapidly fading and paralyzed on one side with loss of speech. He has been ill for years and the chambers plan to urge the grand duchess to resume permanent regency she assumed last April.
A gasoline launch towing a clinker boat carrying Chinamen crossing from Canada wrecked on the south breakwall. Six of the Chinamen drowned and four survived by climbing onto the breakwall before police boat rescue. Six bodies recovered.
Washington reports that Roosevelt's lecture services are in high demand across Europe says Cuba's Minister Quesada who visited the White House. He cites plans for a tour after March with Oxford and some French engagements and notes no firm timetable beyond potential Europe visits. A separate Biloxi note reports Henry Leidy shot and hanged by a mob near town after a criminal assault accusation.
A Chicago girl’s discovery near Marango Illinois reveals Thomas Betford suspected as a daytime farmer and nighttime highwayman. Victim Ovcar Hogantom found with a severe head wound and hatchet nearby. Sister Arvilia Hoganaen led the search aided by her spade. Betford held in Beatrice Nebraska as authorities seek links to local farm robberies. Federal labor debate notes a socialist victory tone as Debs party gains ground in the federation. Convention resumes after a printers’ home visit with talks from English and Canadian delegates.
Grand Forks N D Nov 12 When arraigned in district court today to plead to murder John Henry colored pleaded guilty to the killing of his housekeeper Ellen Fulton several months ago Jo Templeton received the plea and announced that the court would deter ed that court the cout wit commit the state penitentiary John Carroll entered a plea of not sullty to a charge of rape His alleged victim was a very young girl the same one who was a complaining witness against him in Fargo when Carroll was held on charge of abduction but which Wax dismissed.
New York Nov 12 A Supreme Court injunction against the National Bank of Commerce to stop deposits for Cottonwood Creek Copper Co Cottonwood Creek Consolidates Co and Noah E Barnes exposes a mining swindle. A young German nobleman posed as an envoy and allegedly drew $700 000 from the German court in Colorado. The envoy is missing.
Three cars of the east bound New York Central Twentieth Century Limited derailed after a broken rail near Blossom Roads just east of the city. The accident occurred shortly after 3 AM as the train, after Rochester stop, was at about 25 miles per hour. No passengers were seriously injured. The last half of the train fell on its side. the third car escaped the derailment.
Melbourne reports the Labor Party withdraws support from the Deakin ministry after failing to push radical measures. The division defeats the government, radical leader Mr. Pisher is set to form a new cabinet, marking Labor’s return to power in the Australian federal parliament.
Judge Taylor of the federal court in Cleveland names Warren Bicknell and Frank A. Beott as receivers for the Municipal Traction Co. in a Nov 12 decision. The action marks a pivotal step in reorganizing the troubled transit firm serving Cleveland, Ohio.
Nashville Tenn Nov 12 John D Sharp ex sheriff of this county was arrested today on charges of murder and aiding and abetting in the death of Senator E W Carmack last Monday. He is alleged to have been seen with the Coopers before the killing and present at the scene after Carmack fell. Sharp was jailed promptly.
In Peking the verdict is that the Chinese emperor is rapidly sinking and will not accept Western medical aid. Reports indicate his health is failing as officials and physicians monitor the situation closely.
Washington November 12 Assistant Justice Rufus W Peckam has reached seventy this past week and the supreme court now includes the chief justice and three associates who may retire on full pay at will Chief Justice Puller is 76 and John M Harlan remains among the associates awaiting nearing retirement decisions

In St Paul on November 12 Charles W Wofford took full responsibility for crimes against three people. He received eight years for second degree burglary a two year term for first degree grand larceny and a total ten year sentence. He pleaded guilty and testified that Brewer and Davis were not involved.

An election recount looms as U S senatorship jockeying unfolds with an advisory primary in which all senator hopefuls ran Hopkins wins re election by carrying more districts than Republican rivals.
Postmaster General Meyer reported the postal deficit for the year ending June 30 1908 at 11 910 279 with receipts of 191 478 633 and total expenditures of 203 351 856 The rise in compensation approved by Congress for railway mall rural and city delivery services and clerks accounts for about 9 891 921 of the deficit The year saw a larger deficit than any prior period amid a general drop in revenue growth due to a weak economy.
An unruly session at the Memphis cotton convention erupted with heated denunciations of night riding and a fiery defense of night riders. L. A.
