Chicago and various cities report exceptionally heavy ballots with brisk weather aiding turnout. Observers note large crowds, lines at polls, and strong GOP expectations in several states while Labor and Democratic camps claim safe margins in diverse counties.
President Roosevelt reached the polling place at 9 80 a m and cast his ballot No 141. Theodore Roosevelt Jr deposited ballot No 142. After voting the president and his son drove to Sagamore Hill.
Utica New York November 2 James 8. her Tun republican candidate for vice president accompanied by his three sons went to the election booth in the third district seventh ward about 10 20 this morning. He ran behind the curtain of the voting machine about 6 seconds and was immediately followed by his son who voted in about the same time as their father. He laid a handful of cigars on the table occupied by the officials, nodded to workers and stepped out to reenter his automobile.
Early Massachusetts precincts report Taft leading in the presidential race with 161 votes to Bryan 40 in Norwell. Avon follows with Taft 171 and Bryan 116 while Draper leads Vahey 164 to 134 for governor.
Washington reports a collision on the Potomac River three miles above Alexandria between a Norfolk and Washington steamer and an Alexandria ferry boat. A number of people are said to have drowned. Authorities were seeking more details on the incident and casualties.
Eau Claire Wisconsin November 1 An alleged highway robber married in secret at the county jail. Frank La Tour awaiting trial on a hold up charge wed Miss Frances Bresina in the jail parlor to show faith in him before a jury decides.
In the Balkan settlement talks Sir Edwin Egerton, Britain's ambassador to Italy, stands out. He joined the diplomatic service in 1859, began as secretary of embassy at Constantinople, and previously served as minister to Greece before his Italy post.
Campaign costs reached a million and a half with 7 tee representatives. The average Republican fund contribution was about $50 in Cincinnati. Colonel James A. Murray, 52, a notorious character, died at Branch hospital. Murray once led a plumbers strike and vowed not to work again if the union failed, then lived off his wits and relatives after the defeat.
Judge Taft arrived in Cincinnati from his campaign tour at 8 this morning. He voted about noon as he continued through the city in a whirlwind schedule with officials accompanying him.
New York November 3 Governor Hughes voted at 7 casting ballot No. 30. In Iowa City a telegram to President MacLean reports Colonel George Bunett former head of the town university military department died after a fire at the academy. Bunett saved many students during the blaze.
Mrs. Julia Olson leads a group of about fifty Norwegians and Swedes from St Paul toward Rochelle Minnesota with husbands and children in search of new homes. The party includes Beeleview and Grasmark residents bound for Idaho and Washington states, with others to Echo Hanska Butte and Grafton. A separate stream brings German speaking Odessa families onward to Aberdeen and the Pacific coast amid rumors of war.
Clyde Younger, a grocery worker in Centralia Missouri, fought off a burglar who struck with a long knife. A knife thrust pierced a package of cigarette papers in Younger’s coat and vest, stopping short of his heart and leaving only a slight wound. The incident occurred as Younger closed the store last night.
Chicago, Nov 3. Miss Agnes Dean Cameron the first white woman to travel north from Alaska will return to Chicago this week after months in the frozen Arctic regions. She lived among Arctic Indians who had never seen a white woman and plans to write a history of the Arctic from a woman's viewpoint.
In Clarksburg West Virginia on November 3 during a Republican industrial parade Frank Whitehair cheered for Bryan. A scuffle followed with Frank Lover after which Whitehair died from stab wounds. Threats of lynch KCITZ Loyal and Mayor Wood ordered saloons closed as precaution.
Mrs. J. W. Davis widow of a railroad contractor killed last March in Chattanooga asked to press the lever at the December 10 execution of Dave D. Edwards. Davis's relatives from nine states and Sheriff Connor planned to invite her to witness the hanging despite objections. Edwards said he wanted to be hanged to go to hell and greet the prosecuting attorney, judge, and jury.
Washington reports the United States government recognizes tipping as a legitimate travel expense. War Department orders allow up to 25 cents per day for tips to hotel staff and 15 cents per meal for waiters or bell boys, with allowances for water travel. Officers may tip stewards or pursers for each twelve hours of travel.
In Fairview Nebraska on election day 1900s era Bryan arrives by dog cart at Hemlin's grocery to cast his ballot at 9 am. Voters greet him warmly and offer best wishes as precinct counts show Bryan ahead locally and countywide with Lincoln and Lancaster County leaning heavily for Bryan.
London reports Queen Alexandria is nearly stone deaf again after Balm treatment. Despite earlier improvement from a specialist, exposure to Balm causing neuralgia and loss of hearing led her to resume therapy.
San Francisco reports a carnival of holdups with thugs growing bolder over a week. A masked bandit robbed a cash register inside a Maroon-clad group and another burglary targeted W. L. Sewarde, a wealthy mining man from Angeler, at the Fairmount hotel back door, netting $600 in cash and jewels.
In Philadelphia on a quiet day, Ada Corey sister of the steel president, wed Chas Aufhammer of the episcopal hospital at the bride’s mother’s home near Downington. Mrs Corey gave the bride away, no attendants, few guests, and no word from the bridegroom’s brother. A telegram of congratulations arrived from Mrs Corey.
Democratic candidate J J Kern sues William Hearst Andrew M Lawrence the Chicago Examiner American and their cartoonists for 100000 alleging Hearst's paper links him to crooks and gamblers Kern denies all charges in a Chicago filing dated November 3.
