In Case county returns show McCumber defeating Hanna-Ross with Frazier and other nonpartisan candidates winning. Sheriff race result favors a Republican nominee with a roughly 712 vote plurality from sixty-eight precincts. Early afternoon tallies indicate strong machine influence in local politics.
In Cass county the canvass shows Burdick ahead for governor with 597 votes to Fraine 195 while Hanna leads for US Senate with 475 to Nestos 135. In Fargo city Walter C. Taylor wins the insurance commissioner race by 772 over S C Olsnes. Attorney Fowler leads for Cass county state’s attorney by about 638 as rural voting tightens the race. Forty of sixty-eight precincts counted yield Fowler 1791 to Miller 1253 with a 538 margin for Fowler statewide through early afternoon counts.
Petrograd reports heavy fighting across the Verdun front near Thiaumont north of the citadel. French artillery and machine guns repelled the German assault, decimating ranks. British artillery fire and trench raids extend across the front in France as Italian forces push on the Trentino front with Fort Mattassone fallen in the Arsa valley. London reports violence on the western front with attacks by British and French repulsed.
A June dispatch from Washington reports Austria’s sharp note demanding an apology from the United States and reparation for a submarine attack on the American tanker Petrolite. The memo, released by the State Department, calls the incident a deliberate insult and outlines expected terms of indemnity. Continued on Page 9.
Primary results across Cass and Steele counties show A T Cole gaining strong support against incumbent Judge Charles A Pollock as 22 of 25 Steele precincts reported with Cole trailing Pollock in total but leading in several city wards. Traill county results favored Cole in multiple precincts, with Cass County showing Cole ahead in early tallies.
With Fargo incomplete the early tally shows John Burke leading Frank Hellstrom by 442 votes for U S senator on the Democratic ticket. In the governor’s race Platou of Valley City holds a 5 vote edge over Halvorson and McArthur among 50 precincts counted.
Washington June 29 the senate approved and sent to the White House the conference report on the Hay resolution authorizing the president to draft into the federal service all national guardsmen taking the prescribed oath. Approval was voted by the home last night and the resolution as agreed strips the house relief for dependents and the senate clause for releasing guard members with families without means.
El Paso June 29 twenty three negro troopers Tenth Cavalry and Lem Spillsbury Mormon scout captured at Carrizal were brought to the border and turned over to American authorities. Juarez crowds cheered as the troopers, weary and variably clad, expressed relief at their return. Official messages from Mexico City confirmed Carranza’s orders to release the prisoners, easing risk of immediate conflict while signaling continued U S military vigilance and broader mobilization plans. National Guard mobilization continued with New Mexico guardsmen crossing into Mexico on Pershing lines to bolster border security.
Latest figures compiled at 3 p.m. today show two thirds of precincts reporting in 24 counties. In governor race Burdick and Frame lead with Frazier named as likely nominee by the Nonpartisan League by about 15,000 plurality. The Forum puts Frazier ahead by 5,000 to 7,000.
Sparse returns due to wire trouble indicate the Nonpartisan League dominates the next legislature. Valley City shows Playbar leading Lee Burl Carr by 199, with Harper runner-up in Cavalier County and other counties reporting league nominees on both major tickets. Ramsey and Benson counties also reflect strong NPL performances, while Hillsboro shows three NPL nominees defeating incumbents.
In Waukegan Illinois on June 29 the cross examination of Will H Orpet the ex UW student accused of murdering Marion Lambert resumed. The lengthy questions yesterday left no early conclusion to the case as both sides await further testimony. Orpet endured the cross examination with few admissions and showed steadiness despite pressure from prosecutor David R Jostyn and witnesses.
Returns show Porter J. McCumber well ahead for Republican nomination to succeed Nimrod Hanna in the U S Senate. Lynn Frazier leads in the Nonpartisan gubernatorial race with Burdick and Fraine trailing. McCumber leads Nestos and Hanna for second in the Senate contest as returns trickle in from rural counties.
Orpet testified he observed on the right hand of Marion Lambert, with whose murder by potassium cyanide poison ing, he is charged. He testified previously that when he turned back in Helm's woods and saw Continued on Page 6.
Charles E. Hughes announced after a lengthy discussion with Theodore Roosevelt that they were in complete accord. The interview extended over more than two hours as Hughes sought Roosevelt's backing for the Republican presidential nomination.
Sir Roger Case ment was found guilty of high treason and sentenced to death. The verdict came in less than an hour after arguments concluded. Daniel Bailey, held as his accomplice, was discharged after the jury returned not guilty.
