Rates on grain and grain products from stations in the Dakotas will be advanced from half to two cents per hundred pounds, effective July 1. The increase mirrors proposed rates suspended by the Interstate Commerce Commission, a year ago.
Ernest A. Stewart former immigration officer and arrested in Winnipeg for the murder of Phillip Worrall outlines a defense. He denies Worrall’s death and says the skeleton identified as him is not Worrall. Stewart hired Bathgate attorney James Burke to represent him as hearings were set to begin. Gymm, Stewart’s Neche assistant, denies knowledge of the affair.
New York June 28 The Olympic the White Star liner carried 2205 cabin passengers plus sixty maid and valet on its maiden trip to England. The voyage from Southampton cost 176000 and the return fares will be 425000, marking a money making record for a vessel voyage.
Washington June 28 Cummins of Town denounced the reciprocity bill as unjust and said it usurps legislative power. He argued the president cannot lawfully propose or receive such a proposal from Canada and asserted Congress alone can make reciprocity proposals. He said he would back efforts for lower duties in other tariff bills.
John Reichmann formerly president of the Carnegie Trust Co was found guilty today of making false statements to the state banking department. Jurors deliberated at length before delivering the verdict in New York on June 28 .
In St Paul Minnesota the Norwegian Lutheran synod committee on the church alliance reported that union with the United church and Hauges branches is desirable and urged forming a new committee to continue negotiations for a three-way unification. The synod also elected officers including C D Jordan of Norway Lake Minnesota as secretary and named members to various church bodies.
The senate committee investigating Lorimer's election heard Hugh McLean and John McLeod deny knowledge of raising funds to “put Lorimer over at Springfield.” Edward Hines was excluded from the room after Clarence Funk testified and before new testimony, amid ongoing questions about his alleged remarks and the Lorimer election expense.
In Washington on June 28 a sub committee of the House committee on expenditures in the state department recommended dismissing United States Consul Wm Hy Michael at Calcutta and disbursing clerk Thomas Morrison after an investigation of portrait vouchers. Michael formerly served as chief clerk of the department.
The senate committee on census agreed to report the congressional reapportionment bill without amendment. It provides for forty two representatives more than the current total and is designed to prevent any state’s membership from decreasing. Three members opposed the increase, LaFollette Dupont and McLean, but seven supported letting the house decide. The report will be withheld a week to allow LaFollette time to respond.
Port Huron Michigan June 2 fire of unknown origin destroyed Beard Campbell & Co store with losses around 75000 and caused 10000 damage to Truesdell Marble & Granite Co plant. Other nearby establishments reported smaller losses.

Mandan North Dakota June 24 Assistant State's Attorney Beam and Sheriff O'Brien brought John Koch to Mandan on incest charges filed by his 18 year old daughter who already has two children by him. A written confession was signed under the new law but Judge Nichols remanded him to Oliver county custody until Thursday at Center for possible penitentiary sentence.
Ke Kan June 2 reports the prolonged Kansas drought eased as early June showers moved through the core region. Heat and dry conditions had caused widespread concern for three weeks before renewed rainfall brought relief to crops and water supplies.
