June 20 Grand Forks North Dakota reports a plan by supporters of T F Marshall to spread a rumor of Senator McCumbers death before the primaries to influence votes. The scheme, if real, aims to derail McCumbers candidacy by fear and confusion. Officials seek a responsible source and denounce the tactic.
President Taft, encouraged by early success of his legislative programme, indicates he will push a publicity measure for campaign contributions in all campaigns affecting federal offices. Vice President signs the Statehood Bill, sending it to the president for approval as the session advances.
The North Dakota pumping projects led by Director Newell are notable lesser engineering works. The government mines coal at its own mine and uses a power plant to generate electricity for pumping plants on barges along the Missouri river at Williston and Buford. Water is lifted into settling basins and flows to canals to irrigate the valley. Average building cost is 42.50 per acre, annual operation and maintenance about 1 per acre. Jackson Ky June 20 Asbury Spiver linked to the Hargis feud shot and killed Judge Fugate and wounded Fugates mother. The Fugates were tenants on Spiver's farm in a strained local dispute.
Lakota North Dakota June 20 John J Lynch of Lakota offered a $1000 reward for criminals after evidence showed Dewain Lynch age 22 was murdered and robbed and his body cast into Seattle bay and found a day later. He had left Lakota weeks before and was buried after the discovery.
Pottawattomie Indians press claims to millions in lake front land protecting Chicago shipping interests and city rights. A proposed settlement idea would place the decision with U. S. Army Chief Engineer Col William H H Bixby after succeeding Gen. William D. Marshall. The lakes-to-gulf deep waterway report continues on Page Three.
Aberdeen D. June 20 Five thousand Catholic Indians will gather at Fort Yates near McLaughlin on June 28 29 for their annual religious congress. Delegations will travel from reservations across the northwest. High ranking church officials including Father Falconio Archbishop Wehrle O'Reilly and Busch will attend.
New York reports a post office inspection led to a July 12 federal hearing over an alleged billion dollar fraud tied to United Wireless Telegraph. Executives Wilson Bogart and Tompkins were arrested and released on bail as officials claim stock was sold at inflated values, with actual worth as low as 2 cents.
New York reports police struggle to unravel the swift, relentless murder of aged jeweler Moses Sachs who was killed for 3000 dollars in diamonds and bank notes. His body was stuffed alive into a trunk left in a Goerck Street hallway after being last seen at a Christie Street grocery. Autopsy indicates he was choked before being placed in the trunk. Police hope tracing the trunk to the dealer leads to the purchaser.
Edinburgh June 20 The World Missionary conference considered government diplomatic and civil questions affecting missions. The report of the commission on The Relation of Missions to Governments was presented. Lord Balfour of Burleigh, chairman, urged a clear pronouncement on the Belgian Congo question.
Sen L A Simpson returned to Dickinson after nine months in Boston where he built a national reputation as a trial lawyer in the Russell will case. He spoke for over an hour at a friends’ gathering about the trial and the support he received, with the account continued on Page Six.
The Minnesota State Federation of Labor opened its eighth annual convention in Fargo with 214 delegates from across Minnesota. Officials and speakers stressed union rights, capital labor balance, and North Dakota’s progressive stance while welcoming delegates at Pirie Hall and the Waldorf hotel.
Police battled two suspected bandits near Front Street and the Great Northern bridge, with gunfire and a fatality narrowly avoided. Officer J L McLean and others exchanged shots as the pair fled north. In a separate Ely incident, James McConville was wounded while intervening in a street assault. J M LaVanway defended with a .32 Colt as a third man was attacked. the assailant was jailed on $2,000 bond awaiting hearing.
Washington June 20 Senator Borah offered an amendment to the senate resolution directing an investigation into bribery charges connected with the election of Senator Lorimer of Illinois to require the investigation be prosecuted immediately. The proposed amendment was rejected.
Washington June 20 The Omnibus Bill passed by the house Saturday carries for North Dakota appropriations pushed by Congressman Hanna including Mandan site and building 55000 Williston site and building 145000 sites at Dickinson, Jamestown and Valley City at 16000 each.
Washington reports Elmer Williams was appointed rural carrier at Berg replacing J I Berg who resigned.
Winnipeg June 20. A large saw mill belonging to the J. D. McArthur Lumber Co. at Atikokan Ontario on the Canadian Northern in the Rainy River district was destroyed today by a bush fire. The loss to the plant and stock is estimated at $100,000.
