The state legislature formed a special committee to review the penitentiary inquiry led by Democrats and insurgents. Governor Burke delayed publication, with the report received in August and only partial notices to committee members. The probe, aimed at exculpating former wardens, remains unpublished as of late.
A hurricane driven blaze on Seattle's northern waterfront swept eastward destroying six city blocks and burning twenty acres. Loss nears $1,000,000 with 600 people homeless and multiple injuries among residents and firemen. Sixty horses perished in a Railroad avenue stable.
New York June 11 Charles R Heike white haired secretary of American Refining Co convicted last night on one count conspiracy to defraud the government of customs due on sugar Ernest W Gerbracht former superintendent of Williamsport refinery convicted on all six counts James F Bendernagel former cashier acquitted 7 to 1. Bail fixed at 25000 cash. Other defendants sentenced or paroled with pending appeals.
President Taft will spend three days in New Haven during Yale commencement week. He departs Washington Sunday night, June 19, attends a Yale corporation meeting the next day, and plans to see his son Robert graduate on Wednesday, June 22, before returning to Washington on June 24.
Washington reports David R. Jones and his Wahpeton bride are on a honeymoon journey starting in the capital. They will travel to the east before returning to Wahpeton, where Mr. Jones was formerly allied with Senator McCumber in legal practice.
Jacksonville Flor June 11 Napoleon B Broward won the Florida primaries for United States senator over Senator Taliaferro. Broward a self made man born on a farm, rose from log camp to steamboat pilot and governor, later entering the state legislature and public offices. Florida honors a son who rose by toil and now leads in politics.
The house and senate conferred on a bill for agricultural entries on coal lands reaching an agreement. Non-mineral entries started before the act's passage are protected and will receive patents to the surface. Those with preexisting nonmineral entries may perfect them under the original law but receive the limited patent provided by the act.
In Chicago on June 11 the Continental and Commercial National banks agreed by director vote to merge. Effective Aug 1 the new bank will serve European houses independently of New York, with capital of 20 million and deposits totaling 184.4 million. George Reynolds of Continental will be president of the merged institution.
Complete returns from the Eighth Iowa district show H. M. Towner, a stalwart Republican, with 2141 votes and Darrah, the insurgent, with 1133. Towner's majority stands at 1003 in Des Moines.
Senator McCumber has received about a hundred bound copies of the congressional eulogies for Senator M N Johnson. The bound volumes are in great demand and reflect the high regard in which Johnson was held by colleagues.
On the steamship Kaiserin Auguste Victoria bound west. Roosevelt dictated manuscripts in the forenoon and received many wireless farewell messages from England and welcomes from friends in the United States at Crookhaven Ireland on June 11.
In Calais France on June 11 the sinking method of the French submarine Pluviose was disclosed when the superstructure surfaced at low tide. A tentlike section was found in the stern where the sub was struck by Pas De Calis. Two bodies were recovered as the tide rose.
Washington June 11 President Taft insists on a provision to control new stock and bond issues by railroads. A White House conference agreed a paragraph for a commission to study the best way to handle the issue in the next Congress. With all Democrats except one opposed, an outright stock and bond control clause cannot pass this session.
Sioux Falls D. June 11. Johnnie Preuss six year old son of Mr and Mrs Fritz Preuss of Mapleton township died from internal injuries after a hired man who was playing with him squeezed him between his knees. The man who cared for the boy was fond of him and spent time playing with him during off hours. The accidental squeeze caused fatal injuries.
Delegates arrive from many states for the National Congress of Mothers in Denver as the first meeting opens. Led by Mrs. Frederick Schoff of Philadelphia and with active figures like Mrs. Sarah Platte Decker, the group includes great grandmothers and grandmothers pushing a nation wide drive for healthier children and hygiene education. Twenty two states are fully organized with twenty more partly so as the congresses press for broader teaching of hygiene.
Mary Little Warrior a Sioux ward and not a citizen, eloped with All Yellow, then returned to the reservation after a habeas corpus hearing in Mandan. Judge Crawford found she lacks full citizenship. she was confined and now must complete punishment for eloping with her affinity.
Winnipeg June 11. William Oscar Kind who murdered Joseph Hindahl a Minnesota native over a northern Alberta outfit was today sentenced to hang July 21 at Fort Saskatchewan. Both were engaged at the time trapping and buying furs.
Enderlin North Dakota June 11 Professor Wilhelm Petterson of Augsburg College Minneapolis spoke at a lively political gathering praising McCumber Engerud and all Republican nominees for the upcoming election. John Flutie of McKenzie county candidate for state auditor also spoke as the Cash Carnival Co. closed the first of a two day engagement with fine weather and large crowds.
Washington June 11 Sam Adams of Perth North Carolina will become register of the Williston land office. He will be the only person ever appointed and confirmed by the United States senate in two hours for the post. He succeeds George Wilson who resigned to campaign for governor. The salary is $3,000 yearly.
Waynesburg Pa June 11 The rod as a corrective agent has been held legal by a Greene county jury even if the recipient is 19 and a social belle. Richard Ewart was acquitted after his daughter Bess testified he spanked her for going to a skating rink.
Kansas City June 11 The bleached flour case in the United States circuit court lingers with more government witnesses and defense testimony yet to come. Day moved slowly as Saturday shortens court time and few conclusions were reached.
Louisville divorcee Mrs Made line Wendling, previously held as an accessory, was released from custody in police court on motion by the prosecuting attorney. She is the wife of janitor Jos Wendling, the man charged with the Kellner murder.
Sixty tender footed candidates wearing white robes gathered at El Zngal Shrine for a long awaited parade. The day featured a bustling schedule with many stunts as onlookers watched wandering entrants, an impressive motorcade of around 125 autos, and a few antics like Bob McIntyre slipping into the Masonic temple to avoid the agitation. The event was organized by Hector Barnes and his small committee. Continued on Page Six.

Bemidji Minn June 11 Louis Olander dies from injuries after a fight at Ole Andersons saloon last night at 9 o clock. Fred Nyberg held in city jail awaiting inquest as witnesses say the men clinched Nyberg allegedly struck Olander or pushed him as he fell Nyberg claims he was drunk and recalls nothing about the incident.
Representative L. B. Hanna heads to North Dakota next week to vote in the primaries and stage a brief county speaking tour. He plans to limit travel to his home region, expressing confidence that he and other North Dakota stalwarts will prevail in the upcoming primaries.
Washington June 11 Attorney Wickersham and assistant William Skellyon are expected to file today in the United States circuit court at Chicago a bill in equity against several Chicago stockyard companies for alleged rebating on freight charges.
A trunk containing the body of Mrs Mary Chariton was found at the bottom of Lake Como. Port er Chariton and Russian Constantine Ispolatoff are linked to the case as police pursue two murder suspects. Evidence includes letters and personal effects in the trunk and a post mortem showing suffocation and head wounds.
Washington report states Elizabeth Bierman was appointed post mistress at the Bad Land office today, succeeding O T Halbakan who resigned. The action follows a routine cabinet confirmation and marks Bierman's entry into the federal service. The change takes effect immediately.
Brownsville Texas June 11 Basilio Martinez stabbed Benito Garcia to death as the bridal party stood at the altar. Martinez attacked in a frenzy after the bride-to-be refused to marry him upon the appearance of a rival.
