Paul Morton the newly elected chairman announced plans for reorganizing the Equitable Life Assurance Society with the interests of policyholders as the first consideration. The statement was made in New York on June 16.
New York June jen Morton to retire from the navy department July 1 named new chairman of Equitable Life Society. The resignations of President James W Alexander Vice President James H Hyde Second Vice President J C Tarbel Third Vice President George T Wilson and Fourth Vice President William H McIntyre were tendered. Brayton Ives and Charles Stewart Smith opposed Morton's election and Hyde relinquished majority control while retaining a substantial interest. All resignations await Chairman Morton's pleasure as none yet accepted.
Princeton New Jersey June 10 Former peeteat Cleveland announced he would serve as a trustee of the Equitable Life Insurance Company and would accept the role.
Bur ton D. Tanner of South Dakota won first place and Miss Neva Stephens of North Dakota second in the annual interstate oratorical contest at the Presbyterian Church. The program opened with university competition for the Department of Public Instruction prize. Tanner spoke on Robert Burns, Stephens on Leo Tolstoy, and Charles Hatch of South Dakota spoke on The Voice of the Slav, each delivering with poise and clear delivery.
Heavy rains sweep through the Iowa region near Burlington and surrounding counties. The worst storm of the season floods vast areas while a university speaker presents on Japan and oratorical contests proceed with regional judges and participants amid continuing downpours.
North Dakota plans to auction about 6000 to 9000 acres of state institution lands during the cease-fall period to raise funds for the $1.6 million capitol building. Mitk, Western Russia, June 10. A London paper report claiming 100 people were shot during rioting here is contradicted. An official report says a Thursday riot between soldiers and Jews followed the theft of a soldier’s purse. Six hundred Jews gathered to assist and threw stones.
Portland reporters note Traveling Men's Day as the largest event since the exposition began. Commercial travelers surged in from Oregon Washington California and Idaho. Special trains delivered attendees from Seattle Tacoma Bellingham Vancouver San Francisco Los Angeles Sacramento and Salt Lake City. The crowd paraded downtown then moved to the grounds for auditorium exercises.
General Carter reports Captain Stacy with eighty men surprised the Paljane main camp on June 4. Forty Paljanes killed, six captured with arms and records. Hobob, chief of the Paljanes, and the Samar fanatic were among the dead. Two Americans wounded.
In Buffalo on June 10 a vigilante group formed by East Side housewives aimed to curb late outings. Mrs Andrew Betha, 60, brought her husband to the eighth precinct station after he returned home late. She, as society president, made an example of him. Justice Vannatter gave suspended sentence with a promise to quit late nights.
Post office salary revisions for North Dakota locations announce increases for Leeds Michigan Mandan and decreases for Hunter Lidgerwood with new salaries listed. Carriers appointed include Leonard Clarence Willis Geo Moran substitute Nome Routes 1 and 2 Olaf Martinson carrier Ole Hanson substitute.
Louisville prepares to host the United Confederate Veterans annual reunion expected to draw thousands. Generals and camps planned, with the big Galt House ball and Daughters of the Confederacy events highlighted.
New York June 10 AP reports both Russia and Japan have accepted President Roosevelt's peace suggestion. A meeting of representatives is assured as Russia will appoint commissioners to hear Japanese proposals, while Japan appoints its own representatives.

Milwaukee June 10 United States District Attorney Butterfield announced former banker Bigelow would plead guilty in U S District Court this afternoon and receive his sentence for basic wrecking in a high profile case.
Three inches of rain drenched Minnewaukan in twenty four hours and more rainfall is expected. Small culverts were washed out and many grain fields are left wooded as the downpour continues with at least six more inches forecast.
State board of law examiners and deans completed exams for the senior class of the College of Law. The list of successful candidates was sent to the Supreme Court at Bismarck for approval. Names include R M Andrews and Fred B Andrews of Norwich and L A L Connolly of Grand Forks among others.
