A St Louis wreck near the city limit injured and killed crew members when the St Louis Iron Mountain Southern fast mail train derailed while taking a curve. The engine jumped the track and the train crashed into a building. no passengers were aboard. Several injured were severely hurt and six others were badly hurt.
Rome June 9 King Victor Emmanuel I and Queen Helena returned from Avellino where they aided earthquake survivors. Before leaving Cali Tri the king ordered all possible relief measures for sufferers.
The Tri-State Postmasters association met on June 9 to introduce resolutions asking that all postmasters be placed under the classified civil service, extending from fourth class to all classes in fourteen states. Other measures include ending non first class mail handling on rural routes and an election slate with Vanish of St Paul as president and Wahl, Wells, Simmons, Rasmussen filling vice president and secretary treasurer roles.
Nazareth Pa June 9 The president summoned Attorney General Wickersham to Washington for a cabinet meeting altering the Nazareth Military Academy commencement program. Wickersham, an 1873 graduate, spoke first on The Value of the Roughness, after rushing to the event from the conference.
Last day to file for primary ballots approached as vacancies allowed petitions. D. B. Smith of Casselton filed for state senator in Tenth district under the Democratic banner alongside B. E. Cole for the lower house. More petitions were expected as a complete legislative ticket and county candidates were anticipated.

Berlin June 9 Commander Robert E Peary was served with papers in a Berlin suit brought by Rudolph Francke, who claims Peary took advantage of ill health to secure Francke collection of furs and walrus and whale teeth in exchange for transporting Cook home. Francke seeks $10,000 in Arctic products. Peary departed for London after noting the case sent to American Ambassador Hill.
Dr E J Goodwin editor of the Missouri State Medical Association Journal urged abolishing the coroner role and transferring medical functions to a medical examiner while shifting judicial duties to the city. In St Louis the AMA second session heard a resolution favoring state laws that place medical functions under medical examiners and adjust judicial functions accordingly.
Louisville, June 9. Frank Fehr, uncle of Alma Kellner, obtained one missing link of evidence needed to prove Alma was last seen alive at St John’s Catholic church. Mrs Staeuble, who lived near the murder scene, testified today about being the last person to see Alma leave the church. The inquest also noted a bloody knife and knife among Wendling’s effects as new developments.

In Chicago on a June night, Frank L Campbell shot dead Lena Hansen and then killed himself at a secluded south western spot. Campbell’s body, a photo of Hansen in his pocket, was found about 5600 feet from her corpse.

Captain Main and the fish hatchery hosted and inspected. Baby fish are being cared for and government stock to be released later. experiments may occur before summer ends.

Haverstraw New York June 9 four persons were killed and one seriously injured when a locomotive struck a coach returning from a funeral. The accident occurred as mourners traveled by rail and emergency crews rushed to the scene. The deceased and injured were identified as local residents and officials investigated the locomotive’s operation.
Duluth dispatch reports a man claiming to be George Miller was caught breaking into a chest in a Great Northern freight car at Floodwood. Special policeman C. J. Welch shot the burglar as he fled after firing at the officer. Miller died of a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Marquette Mich June 9 Samuel Hill fell 600 feet down a mine shaft at the American mine and was killed. He was riding a cart against orders. His widow survives him.
Philadelphia report states Judge McPherson ordered the bucket shop defendants to Washington for trial after they resisted removal from the local jurisdiction. The case centers on alleged fraudulent investment practices and the men were arrested here weeks ago pending transfer.
A boy was killed and three women injured in Connecticut car accidents over 24 hours. In Berlin a car hit a trolley and overturned injuring two women. Albert P. Dale, 8, was killed in Bridgeport after leaping from a wagon into traffic. On Sport Hill in Easton Mrs. C C Lacey lost control and crashed through a bridge into the water. her husband was unharmed.
Indianapolis June 9 ex-Congressman John E Lamb recalled a Palm Beach talk before the Spanish American War with Speaker Reed and Amos J Cummings. Lamb says Reed questioned Indiana belief in a Spanish blowup of the Maine and claimed the board of inquiry knew the explosion was internal, implicating Admiral Sampson and President McKinley.

Norfolk on June 9 reports the ship Good News struck a storm and sank after pumps failed. Captain P. A. Erickson and nine crew members, plus Elizabeth Erickson, were rescued by the British steamer Metis after three days at sea in two lifeboats. Elizabeth urged the men as the vessel went down.
