Los Angeles dispatches note Shriners today in the city with Fargo Imperial Potentate Irwin and other high dignitaries. The cabinet discussed a new point in controversy as Japs claim the treaty breach relates to anti alien land laws and the fourteenth amendment. The note outlines Japan’s stance and the political framing of the issue.
Tokyo June 6 The Japanese note to the United States on California land owner ship legislation asserts the bill violates the Japan American treaty spirit by discriminating against a friendly power. It argues the issue is political and within international relations and cites Article I of the 1911 treaty allowing subjects to own or lease houses inseparable from real estate.
In Boston on June 6 the cases of William M Wood Frederick E Atteaux and Dennis J Collins charged in a dynamite planting conspiracy went to the jury Judge Crosby instructed verdicts on six counts with acquittal on the sixth count for conspiracy to injure property He warned no evidence supported that charge Today marked the culmination of the case following Monday’s final arguments Collins has confessed to dynamite activities with Lawrence undertaker John Brown placing charges in homes of striking workers
In City, Mo on June 6 a paper on Heat as a means to control all insects was read at the convention’s final day by George H. Dean of the entomology Department at Kansas State Agricultural College. Topics included wheat growth crop improvement and flour milling industry issues were discussed. The convention adjourned tonight.
Mina June 6 Thelma Aline Hanson two year old daughter of Mr and Mrs John Hanson died after eating a piece of colored chalk a school child had brought home from school The child placed the chalk in her mouth and was seized with convulsions despite milk and remedies from a physician The case was diagnosed as poisoning from colored chalk
Washington June 6 The senate sub committee on the wood pulp schedule of the Underwood bill conferred with John Norris of New York chair of the American Newspaper Publishers association on print paper costs. Paper manufacturers urged a countervailing duty due to Canadian pulp restrictions while Norris opposed any duty, arguing measures against Canada hurt American makers and consumers.
In Frauendorf suburbs of Stettin on June 6 a clash between police and workers left seventy seriously wounded. Police used sabres and revolvers while strikers fired pistols but were overwhelmed and dispersed, leaving many injured on the ground.
In London on June 1 a protest outside St James Palace by militant suf fragettes disrupted the peace conference sessions with a hostile crowd pulling speakers from their wagon platform. Police arrested three of the demonstrators.
Vice President and Mrs Thomas R Marshall are guests in Nashville for Founders Day at the YMCA. A public reception was held in their honor and later they visited the Hermitage, Mrs Marshall’s old home. Mr Marshall will be principal speaker at a dance this evening.
Alfonso Alana, an Italian man whose leg was crushed at Ladoga, died in a hospital in Jamestown New Jersey at 1 am Wednesday from the shock. The body was removed to Flint undertaking rooms for burial preparation. A brother in law is in charge of the remains. The widow and four children are in Italy.
About 1,500 guests attended a grand ladies night during Masonic Home-coming week at the Masonic Temple. The event featured El Zagal and Wimbledon bands, a parade of officials, Arab patrol drills, and a lively program ending with dancing.
Farko hosts a large group of high officials from the Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. William A. Irwin of Wheeling West Virginia imperial potentate arrives with Oscar W. Burdats past potentate of Ositia temple. He is welcomed by Frank Treat and El Zagal nobles. Also present are Pred A. Hines of Los Angeles and C. E. Ovenshire of Minneapolis as imperial officers.
Chicago June witnesses including bankers and many employers prepared to testify as the Illinois Vice and Minimum Wage commission began a two days session. The panel sought light on how low family heads wages relate to female immorality, with Julius Rosenwald openly challenging the commission after prior testimony hinted inadequate fatherly wages drive vice more than daughter wages.
John Hackett publisher of The Bottineau Confant and former telegraph editor of The Grand Works Herald is in serious condition in Russell, North Dakota, after a sudden appendicitis attack during a farmers gathering address. An operation revealed a ruptured appendix. initial hope faded as conditions remained dire with uncertain recovery.
The Curran committee report on police conditions alleges a partnership between some New York Police Department detectives and criminals. The third section details this charge and the board of aldermen faces a brisk fight over adopting the report. The bureau is described as hopelessly inefficient.
Washington June 6 The steamer Mexico chartered by the American Red Cross was due at Vera Cruz today and will depart for Galveston in a day or two with about 200 American refugees. These Americans have been made destitute by enforced idleness due to suspension of business and long continued disorder in Mexico.
James McNair a Pennsylvanian railroad ticket agent was killed at noon at Union Station Pittsburgh. His chief clerk Ralph Paully was fatally shot by D C Sage a clerk who faked a promotion in recent staff changes to the ticket departments.
The week’s grand spectacle, the Great Parade, drew crowds as patrols and temple bands filed from the Great Northern station to Island Park near Murgo vole lege. Temples from Gor to Aad showcased silver instruments, banners, and regalia while spectators on Fargo college hill watched a vivid procession including a humorous novice chain and the famous El Zagal cannon squad. The Aad parade led by Captain A H Paul featured a goat named Arthur guarded by Noble Henry Brunt, with Potentates from St Paul and Duluth nearby.
The Duluth delegation led by Potentate Thomas P. Bradley arrived on a special train at 7:30. The party included the official divan, the Arab patrol, and the famed cannon squad of Aad temple, with a 20-piece band. They were welcomed by Zagai patrol at the station, escorted to the Masonic temple, then to quarters at the Hotel Waldorf.
Zuhrah temple Minneapolis with many nobles and ladies is represented by Potentate F Frankhauser, Thomas Woegue Chief Rabban, Zuhrah patrol with 26 members led by Capt. A M Shuey, plus a 25 piece band and 24 buglers. Continued on Page Eight.
The parade will form on Fifth Street north near the Great Northern station and proceed south along Broadway to Northern Pacific Avenue, then east to Fourth Street, south to Front, west to Bront, south to Eighth Street, then west on Fourth Avenue to Tenth, south to Front, east to Eighth Street, then to Roberts Street and the Masonic temple before disbanding. Marshall is Mal G. C. Grafton with aides Lieutenant Lewis and Captains Fraser and Sorrens, plus Lieut Healey.
