New Orleans June 3 The birth day anniversary of Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy, was celebrated throughout the south today. It is a legal holiday in Florida Georgia Alabama Mississippi Tennessee Texas South Carolina and Louisiana.
Manila June 3 The United States Army transport Indianapolis sank today in twenty fathoms of water eighteen miles outside Corregidor island after striking a log. All on board took to lifeboats and no lives were lost according to reports.
President Taft urged graduates at Ohio Northern University Ada to pursue law ministry medicine teaching farming or industry while denouncing muckraking journalism as an unjust practice he predicted would end in a few years Roosevelt’s crusade was praised and socialism was noted as a future challenge. The couple wed in Seattle where the child was born and the marriage drew wide attention due to her family standing and reports of ill treatment and thriftlessness.
A middle aged man, found unconscious beside a railroad track eleven miles west of Dickinson, may have been struck by a passing train hours earlier. He was brought to Dickinson hospital in serious condition with likely poor chances of recovery. Papers in his pockets suggest he once worked for a Chicago railroad, but no name is shown.
In Chicago on June 3, John Larsen a janitor at the Kent building located at 12 Sherman Street was discovered dead in his sleeping apartment. His charred body lay after a fire caused substantial damage and police indicate he was beaten before the blaze begun, with the assailant fleeing toward another room as the victim burned.
President Taft signed the Hanna bill opening the Fort Berthold Indian Reserve to settlement. More than 400,000 acres of rich agricultural land will be subject to entry. The signing occurred with Representative Hanna present and the pen to be sent to the North Dakota Historical Society.
Kansas City, Mo. June 3. J H Shepard of South Dakota state agricultural college testifies in federal court on the chemical effect of the Alsop process bleaching flour. He says unbleached flour is creamy white while bleached flour is chalky white and notes the chalky tone disappears when basic orange and yellow tints vanish. He describes bleaching flour with pure nitrogen peroxide for experiments.
The state pardon board in Bismarck granted pardons to Frank Lake and N Robbie. Lake, released on parole and now running a Fargo business, was sentenced in Cass county for assault with a dangerous weapon years ago. Robbie, from Pembina county, was sentenced Jan 7 1909 for forgery to two years.
Commander R. E. Peary met King George at Marlborough House and spoke about his achievements and Captain Scott's Antarctic plan. The British Antarctic expedition sailed yesterday and Scott set December 1911 for his South Pole arrival as Terra Nova heads to Cardiff and then New Zealand to continue the voyage south.
In the Mott avenue subway station in the Bronx on June 3 a crowd of hysterical women screaming children and panicked men fought through dense smoke to reach a single elevator exit sixty five feet above the subway level. Fifteen people were overcome by smoke and two men were seriously injured. The fire in an automatic pumping station caused the smoke, but damage was nominal.
Three men were buried under a sidewalk at Park Row and Chambers streets during the construction of a new municipal building. They were pulled out alive and uninjured. initial reports had claimed they were killed.
