Louis Larson a 31 year old farmer from three miles south of Wheelock was found dead with a mangled body beside G N tracks after being struck by a train while walking to Wheelock. He was single and resided near Wheelock.
A man about 00 years old, who says he served in the marine corps on the western coast, attempted suicide at the asylum using a Krag rifle. He bears a deep scar on the jaw from entry to exit and has been staying at a local hotel for two weeks.
Harold Sto a 48 year old farmer and pioneer of Norway township was found dead in a hotel room in Devila Lake North Dakota on December 31. He was last seen alive Tuesday evening and was discovered by Mrs. Palmer kneeling beside the bed with head bowed. An autopsy by Dr. Jones concluded death from alcoholic toxemia. Sto’s brother Anton Sto and John Buget arrived to arrange funeral plans in Coulee township.
A 19 year old named Carl Dewsbury is charged after a Ramsey County set of events in which a farm horse sustained severe tongue injuries. The horse owner is John Spiesman. Dewsbury fled but was captured by Deputy Sheriff Frye and awaits arraignment. The offense carries up to one year in jail and a $500 fine.
Russell-Miller Milling Co manager Davidson shuts Dickinson mill for a few days due to river freezing cutting water supply. Emergency wells will supply water. the plant requires 8 000 gallons per hour to run.
Smithe of Fessenden North Dakota guest of the Lenox reports prairie chickens so thick near Fessenden that they enter back yards in search of food. Snow cover makes it hard for birds to find sustenance and hunger drives them to garbage pails. Some mornings ground appears black with birds and a girl is seen feeding them. Locals consider taming some wild chickens to adopt farmyard habits. Smithe states he is not related to Dr. Cook.
Westphal, a resident near Neche, narrowly survived after a brutal two mile trek through a blizzard. He broke through the Pembina river ice, fought the storm for more than twenty four hours, and reached safety at Welford’s before dawn. Doctors fear frozen legs may require amputation of toes, though recovery is possible.
The North Carolina coal rate case goes to the U S Supreme Court on February 21 in Washington. Attorney General Miller and Judge Corliss will argue for the state over charges that railroad rates for coal transport are excessive. The state won the original suit. railroads appealed. If the Court sides with the railroads, dealers may receive large rebates of overcharges.
Bismarck N D Dec 31 The first meeting of the North Dakota railroad commission will be held in this city Jan 4 6 and 6 1910. A number of matters of importance to the state rail system will be discussed and acted upon at the sessions.
Officials anticipate representatives from several departments to discuss cattle guards at grade crossings. The meeting will also decide charges for return of empty oil carriers and joint freight rates from Grand Forks on the Soo line. Final settlements expected on both issues.
Gov. John Burke toured Grand Forks on a trip to Lankin for the opera house opening. When asked about a third term, he declined to announce and said no decision would be made for some time.
