Reading Pa December 29 Five men were instantly killed early today by a boiler explosion at the Metropolitan Electric Co new plant in West Reading. The night watchman had just left at 6 30 and the day shift arrived when the boiler blew up. Al in the immediate vicinity met instant death.
Deputy Sheriff John H. Anderson lies near death in a Belleville hospital after an ambush at Kolb Coal Co mine in Mascoutah at 10 30 yesterday. Henry Barth attacked mine night watchman with an iron poker in a Mascoutah saloon at 9 30 during a dispute with Philip Kolb one of the mine owners. Anderson had received threatening letters related to a work stoppage at the mine.
Bitter cold grips much of the nation with snow from Ohio River to Georgia and Alabama. Louisville records 6 above zero, Nashville 8, and central Alabama and Georgia see freezing temps. Missouri river valley reports zero to 20 below, with Norfolk Nebraska 18 below and Omaha 6 below. Sioux City 16 below, Des Moines 12 below.
Mississippi health officials report 188 pellagra cases under treatment statewide during the year, with 91 deaths. The state charity hospital at Vicksburg treated 21 cases, and Lauderdale County bore the heaviest mortality with 26 deaths among 43 cases.

In Toledo on December 29, Carol Hunt aged 18 was killed at her home and her parents Mr and Mrs Stephen Hunt were wounded mildly. Police seek Joseph Mackley a 33 year old railroad worker believed to have a wife and child in Mansfield Ohio who allegedly entered the Hunt residence and began firing after being repulsed.
Minot Dec 29 educators from across North Dakota gathered for the annual North Dakota Educational Association meeting. Departments on higher and professional education elementary education and superintendence held sessions while history civics and social science and musical education presented earlier. A public reception capped the day as papers on extending higher education’s influence were read by McFarland Sheppard James Reudinger and Gillette.

Grand Forks North Dakota December 29 K H Johnsons paint store at Fourth street and Kittson avenue was partly burned last night after a sudden blaze startled a nearby railroad signal tower watchman who saw a man flee The fire department arrived quickly but interior stocks were consumed the loss is insured and water damage will be covered by insurance valued at about 4000 dollars for paints oils varnishes wallpaper and mouldings The rumor spread that the opera house was afire causing excitement
In Peru Indiana at the Bears hotel a man registering as L. B. Lenhart of Chicago shot and killed Dora Chappel in the hotel dining room around noon today and then fatally shot himself.
St Paul December 29 railroads withdraw their pledge to abide by the Chicago wage conference and re employ striking men as fast as spots open The statement stands as written and no change has been made The strike message shifts to Washington where a conference with President Taft may be sought by H B Perham of the AFL and Knapp Neill on Friday
