North Dakota reports Larimore named best institute point in the state by Supt. T. A. Hoverstad after the second fair and institute in Larimore. The event showcased broad local engagement, open discussions, and plans for next year as residents prepare for another fair and institute.
Bordulac are visiting at the J. W. Tousley home. Mrs J H Duncan left for a few days visit with Dr Duncan at Lethbridge. Alta. Miss Mary Frank is visiting relatives in Minneapolis this week. Cor H.
Grafton North Dakota December 24 Sheriff Ar not returned from Shepherd township with John Lewis charged with Todbery in the first degree The complaint is made by Richard Frien who claims Lewis took about 79 from him during a row on November 19 The defendant was taken before Justice Ball for a hearing but witnesses were absent and the examination was continued until December 28 Be Smith Peterson of Park River will represent the defendant.
Fifteen of the students at the state school for the deaf have gone home for the holidays. Seventy remain to celebrate a merry Christmas with a tree, a party, and planned matinee at the Grand. Superintendent Bangs and staff aim to keep spirits high during vacation.
Miss Mary Puschinsky of Hoople, nearly of marriageable age without parental consent, became the first woman to secure a license without a gentleman present under Judge Sheperd. She chose Axel Tolefson of Kempton, and the couple departed for Hoople to wed.
Thomas Fahey of Hope township sold eggs and poultry in Devils Lake for 80 dollars. He packed 111 dozen eggs and sold them to John Haslam for 35 cents a dozen. Fahey notes eggs can be kept a year or more with his packing method. Devils Lake’s growing population fuels demand, boosting land values and farmer profits.
Turtle Lake man Jay Russell was arrested by Sheriff McGillis of Burleigh County North Dakota on December 24. He is jailed in Burleigh and will be sent to McLean County to face charges for violation of the prohibition law and ball jumping. His bond was forfeited after missing a McLean County court term and a bench warrant was issued. Russell was prominent in Turtle Lake business and social circles, running a drug store and reportedly selling liquor without a permit.
Walcott North Dakota December 24 P O Heglie drainage commissioner of Richland county died at his home after a two week illness with typhoid fever He was a prominent citizen and former county commissioner on the county drainage board and had held public offices in Walcott and the county.
In Grand Forks on December 24 the jury awarded Webb $5,266 for injuries when a scaffold collapse at Dinnie Bros. site left him with leg and hip damage. The trial, one of the district court’s most noted civil actions, included a 16 hour deliberation and a related special verdict about wall undermining and shoring. The case likely goes to the supreme court on appeal.
Minot North Dakota December 24 T J Hughes a city resident and former city worker was cut over the head and eyes during a pool hall fight at Olanders pool room. He was removed from the premises in a battered condition. Police arrested Frank Vinney who admits striking Hughes. Two other men were also detained as investigators seek the assailant.
Four Standing Rock Reds were captured and sent to Bismarck for winter confinement. Sheriff Jones of Emmons county arrived in the city on Wednesday with the quartet to be held in the penitentiary, marking a stern roundup in the local crackdown.
Indians from Standing Mook reservation were placed in the county jail here after being charged with adultery. The Emmons county jail is unsafe for confinement and they will remain imprisoned until the next term of the United States court. Named defendants include Martin Blackhoof, Joseph White Lightning, Annie Eagle, and Red Horn. Preliminary hearing held before Commissioner Weatherby on a complaint sworn by Indian Agent Wells.
Harvey N D Dec 24 The state constitutional rule prevents any legislator from running for office with salary increases approved in the prior assembly. Atty H J Bessessen of this city says he appreciates the offer to run but cannot join the race for financial reasons and as a current legislator.
Minot North Dakota officials outline plans for an upcoming three day educators meeting. A near $1000 fund drive, decorated principal buildings, pennants, and an elaborate reception on December 29 at the opera house are planned. A bureau of information at the Leland hotel will assist delegates, with uniform pages guiding travels and a sleigh ride for about 500 delegates.

Cleveland council, under a suspension of rules, introduced and passed an ordinance renewing many street railway franchises. Current lines would keep 8 cent fares with penny transfers and expire June 1, 1910. The action followed a blanket renewal for Cleveland Railway Co. at 4 cent fares and seven tickets per quarter, prompting Republican opposition. Ida Melin, electrologist and chiropodist, has moved to 106 Broadway.
Police investigate poisoning of five members of Viceroy Mentors staff and servants at the viceregal Calcutta residence. Believed to be part of a terrorist plot aimed at killing the viceroy.

In New York on December 24 predictions by bulls that cotton would reach 16 cents a pound before the holidays came true. The May contract hovered near 16 cents in the forenoon as stronger cables supported a rise. Cash prices also touched 16 cents, and traders acted on the opportunity, pushing the market higher.
