Seven city officials and two prominent Smoky City financiers were arrested on graft charges. More men are implicated as the probe expands through Pittsburg and surrounding entities.
Nine defendants posted an aggregate bond of 178000 and were released, as Pittsburg wakes to a major scandal. Court hearings to continue with further arrests expected, though none planned for today.
Seven councilmen and two bankers were arrested on charges of corruption in Pittsburg. Overnight and into today, investigative meetings and conferences involved defendants, attorneys, voters league leaders, and city officials as authorities prepare further arrests and disclosures.
Lucille Pierce the Fargo girl released from Grand Forks after posting a 600 bond to appear in court when needed has joined her parents in St Paul. Joe Carroll once faced Fargo court on a kidnapping charge regarding Lucille Pierce but was dismissed for lack of evidence. Carroll later faced another charge in Grand Forks with Pierce as a witness, but the jury disagreed and no disposition has been decided.

Detroit December 22 Hugh Chalmers of this city left a post paying $72,000 a year to strike out on his own. A self made man Chalmers built his life on energy and industry and now seeks success by independent effort, coming to Detroit from the National.
D. K. Carpenter once employed by the Northwestern Telephone Co is charged with embezzling about 2000 dollars. His preliminary hearing before Judge H F Miller is moved from last night to this morning at the request of Tracey Bangs Grand Forks attorney for the company.
Postmaster John P. Spangler was knocked senseless by a sandbag wielded by an unknown bandit and robbed of 25 dollars from the post office in Steele North Dakota after a nighttime visit at 8 o clock. Authorities have little to go on beyond prints near the side door as residents search for the culprit.
Washington December 22. Members of Congress report heavy mail from applicants for census positions, though no appointments occur before spring 1910. The next census work starts after the bureau’s permanent organization, created under Census Director Meriam. The House bill leaves clerical and field staff out of civil service exams, fueling patronage tensions and clashes with Roosevelt’s high grade clerical aims.
Devils Lake North Dakota plans a $25,000 theatre with a brick 50 by 140 foot building and 600 ground floor seats. Fargo jobbers win a 9 percent cut in the Northern Pacific distance tariff after a Fargo conference with the North Dakota railroad commission and the Fargo Commercial Club rate committee. The adjusted rates aim to level competition with Twin Cities jobbers and go into effect January 1.

The American wife of George Ah Wong, a Plano, Illinois restaurant operator, poisoned her four children with wood alcohol and stabbed Ida, 3, then killed herself by leaping under a Burlington train. Ida died. coroner's jury cites temporary insanity.
Caracas via Willemstad reports the failure of a plot to assassinate acting president Juan Vicente Gomez. Cipher cablegrams tied President Castro in Berlin to agents here after anti Castro demonstrations. A prominent lawyer filed charges in federal court accusing Castro of complicity and seeking impeachment.

London telegram reports the house of Lords approved a mine reform bill establishing an eight hour day in coal mines later set as nine hours. Effective July 1, 1909 the measure keeps eight hours for below ground work after excluding descent and ascent time.
New York reports Oscar Hammerstein through his attorneys obtained a supreme court injunction against The World and Press Publishing Co to stop publication of letters claimed to be written to him by Bruce Salter aka Frances Lee. Mrs Lee sues Hammerstein for breach of contract. The injunction rests on the writer's right to read but not publish. argument for permanence set for Monday.
In Grand Forks North Dakota on December 22 arrangements for a reunion of former university students attending the North Dakota Educational Association in Valley City next week are well in hand. A reunion session will be followed by a banquet with speeches. The ex university group has become a regular, interesting feature of the state association gatherings.
The funeral of Mrs Susan Moran wife of Robert Moran who died Friday night was to be held today at 1 30 p m but postponed until tomorrow due to her sister arriving from the east. Services will be at 1 30 p m from the First Methodist church Rev H G Leonard officiating. Interment will be in Riverside cemetery
Attorneys for Thornton J. Hains vow to subpoena District Attorney Darrin and Social Prosecutor White as they seek to undermine Mrs. Helen Annis testimony about Hains allegedly beckoning his brother and the two men to the float where Captain Hains shot William E. Annis. They claim the scene was coached and that cross examination was rigged.

Pres J H Worst of the agricultural college returned from Larimore where he attended a farmers institute and a mid winter fair. He delivered an address on Agriculture in Holland and praised the fair as a commendable idea with fine exhibits in vegetables grain and poultry. The event featured a domestic science department and will run three days before holiday recess. Supt T A Hoverstad is arranging the series schedule and will announce it later.
