Toledo reports an unknown man was killed and Marshal F. C. Woods of Greenwich, Ohio was seriously wounded in a pistol attack by five railroad workers in the village railroad yards. The assailants fled after overpowering the marshal and exchanging fire.
Minnesota Governor John A. Johnson visits Columbus for two hours on the way from Washington to Delaware Ohio where he will address Ohio Wesleyan University students on The Majesty of the Law. He meets Governor Harris and is received by the state supreme court justices.
Four more mutinous soldiers of the French foreign legion were captured near El Kreider, Oran, Algeria, on December 16. The band continues its fight with a leader wearing an officer's stolen uniform, after previously holding up a train en route to Oran.
Washington December 16. A default of 85 000 has been found in the First National Bank of Somersworth New Hampshire. The cashier has been arrested and the board of directors asks the bank examiner to take possession for voluntary liquidation. The currency controller was informed by the district bank examiner.
Experts testified at a Missouri hearing as the two cent passenger fare was challenged under federal guidelines. The case before Judge Staley McPherson centered on whether railroads may charge a reduced rate and whether this constitutes an unlawful practice under state and federal law.

Limoges France Dec 16 Ten persons were killed and fifteen injured today in a collision between a passenger train and a freight train in a pouch tunnel between Brive and Limoges.
E. O. Hellstrom warden of the state penitentiary at Bismarck Carl Nelson Conda editor candidate for state oil inspector William Collins national committeeman and other democrats held a conference in Grand Forks to discuss appointments. Nelson faces rival Jack McAndrews of Fargo for oil inspector and Purcell of Wahpeton is expected to receive a supreme court justice seat with the other seat likely to Ward or Grand Forks counties. Frank Willson will not be reappointed as oil inspector.
Senator Lodge discussed the Brownsville affair in the senate today as a member of the military affairs commission that investigated charges against soldiers of the Twenty fifth regiment who shot up Brownsville.
The Citizens State Bank of Napoleon Ohio was assigned to D. D. Doneyart Metnight amid claims the failure resulted from over loans and the collapse of a German Insurance Co. other factors blamed include local conditions and management.
Alderman John Coughlin known as The Bathhouse was arraigned in Chicago charged with assaulting Lyman Atwell of the Chicago Record Herald during the First ward democratic ball. Photographer Atwell and cartoonist Wynce King were beaten as Coughlin allegedly struck and camera equipment was damaged amid a crowd outside the event. Additional charges may follow as the incident unfolds.
Captain C A Decker and his family aboard the schooner Annie escaped when it capsized in a squall en route to Belize. The vessel sank with 70 000 coconuts and 4000 in silver, after which the Harry T. Inge carried the survivors to New Orleans. The report also notes the Missouri Supreme Court affirming life terms for John Woolley and Robert Sassman for second degree murder.
Herman Schultz, indicted by a federal grand jury for robbing the Mcleod post office in Ransom county, will be the next prisoner tried in federal court. His trial follows the Crawford case, with interpreter Henry Krogh secured to aid Schultz who is German and cannot speak English. Victoria B C December 16 Advices from the Makura report natives of Rokehanga Island in the Manahiki group have hauled down the British flag and proclaimed a republic. A mass meeting backed the move appointing judges and police while European traders’ stores closed. Ringleaders were seized and fined under the new regime. The islands form part of the Cook group and are incorporated with New Zealand.
New York reports Robt H Fullerton son of St Louis lumber magnate is charged with abducting Gladys Hobart of Yonkers. He posted 2000 bail. Police say they were Cornell classmates and he lured her abroad promising marriage at the first port.
A fire in Boston today destroyed Curtis Hall in West Roxbury, damaging the building and a lower floor branch of the Boston Public Library. Estimated damage set at $50,000. The blaze caused significant losses to city services and local residents.

Monrovia Cal Dec 16 After eight years of torture from a broken back Frank Sandoval died. He survived years after his spine was crushed with fragments removed and artificial supports used. He could not stand or lie down and remained in a wheeled chair until progressive decay of his nerve centers led to death.
