Washington reports the first figures from the U S forest inventory show vast losses from fires logging and processing. Since 1870 fires destroy about fifty lives and 60 million dollars worth of timber yearly while over 60 million acres burn annually. One fourth of standing timber is lost in logging and long leaf pine boxing for turpentine destroys a fifth of timbered areas. Mill losses range from one third to two thirds of sawn timber and seasoning losses run from one seventh to one fourth. Only 320 feet of lumber are produced for every 1 000 feet that stood in the forest.
