A fatal vehicle crash in Washington state leaves four people dead. Investigators say the wreck occurred on a rural highway late at night. authorities have not released the identities of the victims. Further details are expected from the sheriff’s office.
Vergennes Vermont December 1 four people were killed and several injured in a Rutland railroad wreck when a gravel train rear ended a mixed train. Two passenger cars and a caboose derailed and caught fire sending victims tumbling down a 50 foot embankment into a brook. Mrs W A Lawrence of Bristol is among the identified dead.
Milwaukee recount shows 23 killed and 41 injured in hunting accidents this year, fewer fatalities than last year’s 26 deaths and 41 injuries. The report notes a decline in casualties from wild shooting by hunters.
In Pittsburg on December 1 a crowd of schoolchildren raided the banquet room set for 1600 teachers at Syria Temple. A negro boy found the store room where dishes had been prepared and led the others to the edibles. The principal in charge could not control the scene without interrupting the convention.
Washington reports the Great Northern and Northern Pacific railroads face suspected anti trust violations. The Interstate Commerce Commission has received complaints that, despite the Northern Securities decree, the lines have renewed a coordination forming a monopoly in restraint of trade. An exhaustive investigation is expected.
Buffalo and Susquehanna Iron Co embraces a self contained plant model with six hundred coke ovens active. The firm owns coal and iron mines furnaces ore docks lake boats and coke ovens, producing all essential materials used in its operations.
In Guernsey county at Middlebourne Benjamin Scott, 48, was shot dead by James C. Nicols, 50, who then killed himself by drinking carbolic acid after Nicols killed no one but himself. Two months earlier Mrs. Scott had been granted a divorce from Nicols for cruelty and soon after married Scott.
In El Paso Texas on December 1 Catarino Gonzales, a famed Mexican desperado, is killed by guard Pedro Gonzales after a prolonged pursuit. The outlaw wounded two guards, killed four pursuers, then ambushed troops, killing two more before his death. He reportedly killed seventeen men in recent years.
In Livingston Montana 400 coal miners walked out after Montana Coal and Coke Co refused to reinstate a discharged worker. The strike shut Aldridge and Horr mines and coking plants, worsened state coal scarcity, and followed failed talks to negotiate the miner’s reinstatement.
Washington December 1 Representatives McCreary is discussed as a potential candidate for commissioner of the general land office replacing Richards. Judge Lacey a former Iowa congressman also tied to the position amid talk Roosevelt may offer both, but no firm action has been taken.
In Bendena Kansas, J W Harris a 30 year old farmer attempted to rob Bendena State Bank. Realizing capture was imminent he placed a pistol behind his ear and fired. Harris entered the bank at 4 pm as cashier W A Gillen and clerk Theodore Selb prepared to close. He ordered them to surrender and to lock doors. Harris shot at Selb through a door but did not harm him. He then killed himself.
Sensational testimony in Chicago ties Cornelius P. Shea to a 1905 Teamsters strike conspiracy. Albert Young testifies that Robert Noren funded the effort with 1500 dollars, later split among Shea and labor leaders to aid Montgomery Ward & Co. workers on strike.
Grand Forks N D December 1 State Senator Jud LaMoure of Pembina visited East Grand Forks to confront Dean Bruce of the State University Law Department over alleged partisan political activity during the late campaign. Bruce reputedly favored Democratic causes and adjourned classes to attend a Democratic speech. LaMoure and William Budge a long time university board member met with President Merrifield to discuss the matter but no outcome is announced.
The seventh annual automobile show opened at Grand Central Palace with a throng of visitors. The event moved to December by request of manufacturers to display 1907 patterns, organized with the American Motor Car Manufacturers association underwriting 60 000 square feet. Half the profits go to the club's exhibition fund and half to exhibitors.
In Herkimer New York on December 1 the Gillette murder trial recessed after a brief session in which prosecutors added minor testimony. Judge Devendorff pushed for a Monday jury submission and indicated a possible night session if needed. The defense sought permission to investigate a point and call a witness, with twenty minutes left to finish the case. The judge ordered written filings for any changes to the charge and apologized to jurors for Sunday delays.
Abraham Ruef and Chief of Police Jeremiah Dinan were indicted by the grand jury for conspiracy in connection with alleged protection of a house of prostitution. Dinan also faces a separate perjury charge. Bonds set at 5000 dollars each. Dinan will remain in place pending trial.
Commander Peary met with President Roosevelt by appointment in Washington to receive hearty congratulations on his latest arctic expedition. The interim note states Peary paid his respects to the nation’s chief executive and was warmly praised for his achievements.
In Madison on December 1 the University of Wisconsin agricultural course opened with nearly 400 students, the largest in any U.S. agricultural college. The college added new faculty and buildings and expanded offerings including agricultural engineering, agricultural economics and practical mechanics.
Butte date line reports Receiver Wil son confirming a $100,000 check from Augustus Heinze, former Aetna bank president who withdrew in 1903. Heinze explains depositors were unaware of his withdrawal and notes many friends may have lost money. He states the contribution will raise assets by about 30 percent.
In Bridgeport Connecticut on December 1, the case of Mrs. Samuel B. Sandford against her husband, son of a Yale music professor, sought absolute divorce and alimony. Judge Shunway ordered the respondent to pay $80,000 and $3,000 yearly for life plus $1,000 yearly for the infant son Samuel until age five, after which $2,000 yearly. It was announced today that the amount had not been further reduced.
In Philadelphia on December 1 the Navy defeated Army 14 to 0 in the annual football game at Franklin Field despite rain. Navy capitalized on second half opportunities as Beaver's spirals and a late field goal sealed the victory for Annapolis. Jade Dagos was convicted of manslaughter with two others found not guilty in Ellsworth, Wisconsin.
Victor H. Metcalf secretary of commerce and labor prompted an immediate trial for Captain William Wright of the Southern Pacific ferry Solano after Supervising Inspector General George Uhler found the vestibules of Pullman cars on the Solano were kept closed during crossing. The incident occurred on the Port Costa Benicia route.
Three banks led by C V Chandler of Ma ne McDonough county have closed. The Bank of Macomb with 450000 dollars in deposits and 60000 dollars capital, the Chandler Imes bank at Colchester with 200000 in deposits and 25000 capital, and the Chandler Smith bank at Bar do Philip with 60000 in deposits and 25000 capital suspended due to lack of ready cash after investing in the county real estate.
Philadelphia December 1 the Pennsylvania Railroad Company enforces a 10 percent wage rise for employees earning under $200 monthly. Over 125000 workers are affected, boosting payroll by about $1 million monthly, with $600000 added on eastern lines and $400000 on western lines.
In Princeton Kentucky on December 1 masked men estimated at 300 set fire to the stemmeries of John Steger and John G Orr controlled by the Imperial Tobacco Co. The blaze destroyed the factories and damaged nearby cottages. No injuries were reported with losses about 170000 dollars. The mob seized the night watchman and disarmed him as they acted.
The funeral of Samuel Spencer president of the Southern railway will be held in Washington on Sunday afternoon. For five minutes during the funeral hour all trains and machinery on the Southern system will halt as a mark of respect. Active pallbearers are ten of the oldest negro porters. honorary pallbearers include J P Morgan and other New York financiers.
Manila reports Major Murphy’s force surprised Pulajanes chief Pablo’s camp on Samar at daylight November 30. Eleven were killed including some of Pablo’s followers, the chief’s son and nine band members wounded, Pablo escaped, wife and daughter captured, camp destroyed. Pablo’s capture regarded imminent. Curdy states the defeat signals end of Pulajanism on the island.
Relics and documents of great value to theology have been brought to Oxyrhynchus in Egypt where an old fragment of a gospel on vellum describes Jesus visiting the temple in Jerusalem. A Pharisee rebukes him for purification as scribes record the ceremony, and Jesus replies on inward purity.
Under the auspices of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts the National Society of Rural Painters and the American Society of Artists open an exhibition in Philadelphia. A very large number of exhibits are on view today at the Society building.
